Whatizit: Shovel

Postby Urbish » Tue May 01, 2018 1:09 pm

Anybody know what this odd shovel/scraper is for? I found it in an old chicken coop that I was tearing down. It is asymmetrical as the handle is attached to the 'scoop' off-center.

They used it for digging around buried phone lines to look for jars with money in them. Grandpa had one just like it.

its a knirdling spade, used to knirdle knarfles. Knarfles fell out of favor almost a century ago so you dont see them at all anymore. but a man could knirdle ten times as many knarfles per hour with that spade than by hand.

(for cleaning out drainage tile? )

It is either a broken shovel that somebody tried to put back together, or it is a planting tool.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

The Tuesday knowledge sometimes is useless though. That shovel is for when you find yourself in a hole, you can fill it in without climbing out.

Looks like a broken shovel. I would put the shovel in the burn pile. Then put the metal parts in the ditch. Or if the neighbor is still picking up metal scrap throw the metal parts in his pickup.
I have an excuse. CRS.

I was talking to one of the local older guys and showed him this. He said he thought it looked like something he had seen before but could think what it was..

Thanks Barnyard. All joking aside, it appears legitimately constructed in this fashion with the handle attached at a 45º angle to the right angle of the scoop portion. Unless I can prove it rode over on the Mayflower or has some other historical significance, I'll cut the scoop off and toss it in the scrap pile. The handle will get reused for something else.

Maybe it's a giant can opener for cutting the tops off of 55 gallon drums:

I usually hang odd thingss like that on my shop wall and wait until somebody comes along and says, "Wow, where did you get the neat (insert name here)?"
