Grease Joint Rejuvenator.

Postby Eugene » Fri Nov 02, 2018 3:14 pm

154 front axle pivot joint grease zerk and joint was solidly blocked.

Purchased a grease joint rejuvenator, also sold under different names, to free up the zerk and grease joint. Used carburetor cleaner as the solvent, because all my other solvents were in spray cans.

Assembled and attached to zerk. Took 6 or 8 gentle hammer taps to get the zerk accepting the solvent. Probably 20 gently tapes to clear the sold grease from the joint.

Tool that I will not frequently use, but it will be handy when needed.

Edit. The tool was $1.00 cheaper at NAPA than the internet. Son purchased online because he did not think it was worth driving 60 miles to save a dollar.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Eugene, what is the advantage of doing that over replacing the zerk?

The zerk was a press in/drive in and not threaded. I didn't feel like removing the front axle to process for a threaded zerk.

I thought about putting heat on the axle joint, but there was a considerable amount of grease and oil in the area. Didn't want to acidently start a fire even though I had fire extinguishers on hand.

Never heard of such a tool before. Seems like it would push old hard grease and dirt into a bearing.
Got a link?

I seem to be having a problem opening the link, but I have seen similar tools that used thin grease to force any blockages out of the fitting. They had a chamber you filled with grease, then closed them and struck the with a heavy hammer or mallet. I have never used one myself, but some people claimed they worked, and some said it did not work. I guess it depended on how bad the blockage was. Do a search for grease fitting cleaner on Amazon.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

John,

I tried the link and it worked perfectly for me. If you google grease joint rejuvenator it will show up. It is made/marketed by Innovative Products of America. During fall and winter IPA regularly advertises the rejuvenator in Successful Farming magazine.

Zerks have a ball inside the end preventing dirt from entering.

During the unclogging process, the only thing that enters the zerk and bearing is the solvent or light weight oil.

I observed the solvent being pushed out ot the joint when I greased it.
