Sounds like a driver problem. Is this a new printer? If not, a driver update from HP may be in order.

several year old printer, but Windows 7 computers do not normally come with a parallel port, so if you have a parallel printer you have to add the port card, that is where the problem came in. the printer not showing after reboot, was a symptom, the actual problem was coming from the drivers windows kept updating for the parallel port card.
