Hi all - when I was a young lad, I recall Dad using a product called permatex <sp> whenever he assembled anything with a gasket. What to you all use for gasket sealer that is available today?

I usually look over the different sealers at the auto parts store and select one designed for the application. The two sealers that I keep on hand are Permatex high tack in a can with brush and Copper Coat in a spray can.

I keep copper Coat on hand for head and manifold gaskets, and the RTV type silicone gasket compound for emergencies, but most of the time I do not use a sealer except for the head and manifold gaskets

Copper Coat and Permatex High Tack for head gasket and sometimes High Tack for gaskets that are difficult to align without using something a little sticky to hold it in place while the other half is mated up.

Permatex Aviation Form-a-Gasket. Comes with a brush. Originally, I thought this stuff was not meant as a gasket dressing, but the directions say it can be used on most types of automotive gasket materials and machined surfaces. I have been pleased with the results.

I like the Permatex High Tack for most of my gaskets. I like the fact that it aids in sealing but doesn't dry hard the other sealers. If I need to remove a components even after a long time, I can remove the component without ruining the gasket. Also, like Rudi said, it holds the gaskets in place upon assembly.

Black RTV, for differential covers. Read the labels on the packs before purchase because there are several different products. Designed as a sealant for car differential covers. I use the black RTV on finals pans and the differential cover on the 154 instead of gaskets. Makes for a leak proof gasket.

I use some of the various RTV sealants. Most work exceedingly well, if the directions are followed and for the correct application.
