I know this is out there but figure you guys are all gear heads like me, and can appreciate well made machines, so a washer and dryer are no different (well, obviously not a tractor but still a machine). I have to buy new ones because we're moving and our old machines, although still working, are 17 years old and I'm figuring that by the time I hoist them out of the basement, clean them up, and move them to the new house, something will finally break. Plus, the new house only has gas for the dryer and we have an electric dryer, so I have to buy a dryer regardless.
I've been doing some research, and although my old set is Kenmore, and I've NEVER done a thing to them in 17 years, I'm seeing LOTS of bad reviews for Kenmore/Whirlpool/Maytag, which are all the same company now. I know I'm not going with the front load washer, as I just don't see spending $1000 for a washing machine alone, but I do like the top-load, high efficiency sets. I'm leaning towards a Samsung model which is currently rated about #7 in the top 10 Consumer Reports, and Sears has it on sale for about $200 off.
Anyway, does anyone have a recommendation, or warning of brand to stay away from? As always, I can't wait to see your opinions.
Thanks!
Bill

None are as good as they used to be. My appliance tech/parts man says Samsung and LG do not have good service networks. Currently using whirlpool but not as happy with this set as the last pair. Seven years old. Pump replaced on washer and door switch replaced on dryer.

We have a Wirlpool top loader that she likes but it has already had the tub assembly replaced...throwing oil all over the floor. Whatever you buy get the extended warranty. It has paid for itself already. Sad but true

Re: Washer/Dryer Recommendations ????
Wife purchased an LG top loading washer and electric dryer about 7 or 8 weeks ago from Lowes. Lowes delivered the machines, removed old machines and install the new machines. The washer has a 10 year warranty. Wife purchased the washer because it had a stainless steel tub.
Wife is planning on giving the LG washer and dryer to son and purchasing a different set. Reason, washer lid hits the cabinets fastened to the wall above machine. She has to hold the lid open to put in and remove clothes.

I have an excuse. CRS.

Re: Washer/Dryer Recommendations ????
Thanks for the info guys. I finally decided to go with a used set from a local repairman. Had a really nice chat with him and he said that he has been to several Whirlpool and Samsung manufacturer classes where they admitted that they are purposely engineering parts to fail within 7 years! He won't deal with new stuff because of this. He buys nice used machines, completely refurbishes them hen offers them for sale with a 1-year in home warranty. He says he goes completely through everything in his shop because he doesn't want to do it in someone's basement. I figure that warranty is as good as the current manufacturers warranties plus I'm buying from a guy who has his reputation to back him up. Not sure if it's the best choice, but for the money I guess I'm willing to gamble.
Thanks,
Bill
