Rod Bender

Postby Bill V in Md » Fri Nov 17, 2017 2:53 pm

I recently purchased a Compact Rod Bender from Harbor Freight, and I am relatively pleased with its capabilities. I had several projects that required bending solid bar stock, and decided to go this route since I do not have an oxygen acetylene torch. The first project was to fabricate a longer hand crank for my Cub that allows cranking the engine with the snow plow mounted on the tractor. I got to say that bending the 5/8" round bar with this tool was easier than expected. I also needed to bend some 3/16" flat bar to reinforce the top deflector on the snow blade. I got the floor mounted model and attached it temporarily to the tractor drawbar, which worked nicely. The price was $79, before tax and coupons. Below are some photos.

I was just looking at these today for bending tubing. I want to mainly use stainless tubing on my hydraulics for my fel/ backhoe.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

This type bender won’t bend tubing. The radius is to tight and it will kink.

My mind is going in strange directions today. When I first saw this heading I thought it was about an International 414 tractor, which was noted for bending push rods.

It’s similar but has dies for each size tubing.

Not bad looking for Harbor Freight. I just wonder how well made it is compared to a better brand comparatively with the price. I've never priced a rod bender.

It would be nice for straightening rear rockshaft lift rods and also be nice for making some new cultivator rear pressure rods (prices on those are sky high)

I was thinking.......I wonder if you could adapt this rod bender or make a design similar to it that would adapt to a hydraulic log splitter? It would be much easier to bend stuff and be more useful (more appealing to use)

Chase, the HF rod bender is pretty heavy duty and made quite well, in my opinion. For round stock it maxes out at 5/8” round bar, but bending it is very easy, as long as you have it anchored securely. The biggest issue I had was trying to understand the directions that come with the bender. Fortunately there are some useful YOUTUBE videos online.

Sounds good. I might have to go look at one in person!
