I been looking at getting a dedicated grease gun just for the throw-out bearing on the Cubs. I don't want to put cheap grease in the big grease gun to grease our loader, front end, etc. and I was walking around Wal-Mart last week and came upon this grease gun for $10 and change, this is the only grease they had and the 3 tubes were $3 and change. Tractor Supply has a small grease gun like this but it has a rubber hose included and it's $14 and change. TSC also carries the small tubes of grease and they may have the black cheap grease good for the throw-out bearing. I'm gonna try this grease and see what happens.
I took the plug out and moved the line coming out of the top instead of having it like a pistol. This will give me more reach into the clutch area.
If this grease works I have enough grease for the throw-out bearings for a very long time

I have one of those, too, but hadn't realized the plug and tube were the same size...great idea swapping them!

Re: Cheap grease gun for throwout bearing
My local auto parts stores carries the small 3 tube package of the black cheap grease. Inexpensive.
I have two graphite throw out bearings to grease. 3 tubes will last many years.

I have an excuse. CRS.

What is it when you say black, cheap grease? Why wouldn't you use the grease used for the rest of the tractor?

You want the lowest grade grease you can get to penetrate the graphite on the Cub throw-out bearing. You don't want the cheap black grease to lube the front end etc. because it won't last long. I like green or red grease for the front end etc.

John,
The whole idea behind lubricating the throwout bearing is to get the oil in the grease to leech into the graphite. Modern synthetic (red or green) greases are designed to retain the oil(s) in the thickener.
Low Grade Lithium or Calcium based greases are the best for the throwout bearing and are typically black in color.
Here is what a throwout bearing looks like that has been cut in half;
This throwout bearing failed because the wrong grease was used, and even if the right grease had been used, there wasn't enough. This TO bearing had only been in the tractor a few months.
There is a hole in the cast iron carrier opposite the grease zerk that allows excess grease to be pushed out. The idea is that you would pump grease into the throwout bearing until is squeezes out the relief hole.
