How do I.... ?

My computer screen flickers when I first boot up, then it seems to go away. I'm guessing that's an indication that the screen is about to die, but wanted to make sure it wasn't a symptom of a failure in the CPU before I bought another screen and had the same thing happen.

Bob:
Depends on the reason for the flickering. It could be the guns if you have a CRT display, could be t mainboard in the LCD display, it could be the video daughterboard or it could be the mainboard. It could be one of a host of things. Without more details such pre-post, post-post or during vid mem check it will be impossible to correctly diagnose.
By CPU do you mean the chip or the box?

Bob, check the cable first... tighten/replace. If it continues to flicker, plug your monitor into another computer (a laptop will work too) to isolate the problem (monitor or computer). If the monitor continues to flicker on a different computer, replace it.

Thanks Rudi and Dennis, I'll do a swap first and see what happens.
