DEAD laptop, What to do?

Postby Super A » Sat Dec 28, 2013 3:16 pm

The day after Christmas, I went to my laptop, flipped on the power strip, pressed the power button and walked away to get some oatmeal. When I came back, the laptop wasn't on. I pressed the power button again, and nothing. It's like it's just dead. The power cord is plugged in, and the little light on the laptop indicating it's connected to ac power is on.

It's been warning me for a long time its battery was nearly dead. It was at the point it would only run for a minute or two on battery power. I have always thought as long as it was plugged into the wall it was ok. Will a completely dead laptop battery keep it from starting up, even connected to ac power?

If it really is dead, is there any way to get my files off of it? I have done what all the experts say NOT to do--I haven't backed up my stuff like I should. ALL my pictures are on there, and I really want em back.... :(

Thanks, & I'll check back in about a day.....

My laptop battery has been dead for a year. As long as I plug it in, it works fine.

Don't know what brand you have or how old it is, but we had some of the older HP's at work that would not power up with a dead battery. Period!

Super A asked: If it really is dead, is there any way to get my files off of it?

I think yes…If the hard drive on your laptop isn’t causing the problem…. you can remove the hard drive and attach it via an adaptor to a USB port to another PC. Your files will be available.

Mr. E, mine is an HP. I got it when I started my doctorate program, so that was 2008-ish or so. I'm wondering if I shouldn't try replacing the battery.

Know anyone that has a similar one that you could borrow their battery for a test? That is pretty close to the time frame. They later fixed the problem on the next model. New models were coming out very fast at the time.

Nope, I treat my compters like my tractors...older the better! :D

I have to go to town tomorrow so I will see what I can find.

My battery died a few months ago, and I was going to buy a new one, but they are around $85 from Batteries Plus. Since I decided I will be replacing the whole computer (around 5 years old and getting cranky!), I figured it would be a waste of money. It is a HP dv6646us and runs fine as long as it is plugged in. Rather than buy a new battery to see if that would work, take it to someplace that sells them and have them put one in. If it works, you can buy it...if it doesn't work, you can go from there with the above suggestions.

Good luck!

The good thing is laptops are cheap now..... I got a 'transfer cable' from Best Buy to transfer the data off an old (not very old) laptop. The down side is you must like yeller tractors and you cannot 'move' programs.

Thank goodness Batteries Plus had one for my laptop and it worked! Otherwise all would have been lost....
