Fast Hitch Wood Splitter

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

Fast Hitch Wood Splitter

Postby Shane N. » Wed Oct 17, 2018 6:53 am

Years ago I traded for a Troy-Bilt Horse tiller and it had a wood splitter attachment with it. For those that don't know you take the tine assembly off and attach the wood splitter. The wood splitter is self contained all but an engine, that's why you have to hook it to the tiller. It really is neat but also aggravating. The wood splitter hasn't been used in some time. Since the hurricane(s) we have some wood that needs to be split and the wife, kids & I enjoy sitting around the tractor rim in the yard roasting hotdogs and marshmallows when it gets cool. I bought this Pacer pump with an 8HP Briggs to flip and wouldn't you know, I've had zero interest in it so yesterday I decided to take the pump off and attach the engine and a FH prong on the Troy-Bilt wood splitter so it's easier to move and we can use the tractor for something else. The wood splitter isn't very big but will work well for us since we're not trying to heat our home or shop with wood.

I was hoping to use this behind the Cub but after weighing the splitter itself after taking off what needs to be taken off it weighs 275#, the engine weighs 55#, the FH prong weighs 20# and I haven't even made a bracket to hold the engine or mounted the pump to the engine. The engine has no gas in it and most of the hydraulic fluid is out of the tank. Looks like it'll have to go behind the 140 which is okay, I can mount it sticking straight out instead of sideways.

Removed the axle, pump housing/tongue & the reservoir tank bracket. Got another FH prong, it’s a factory IH one that was on the Holland transplanter Beaulah gave me. The planter is sitting in the flower bed and won’t be used again anyway.

Got the hitch welded on. I left the flat stock sticking out both sides because I was going to brace it off each side. Then I decided to cut them off because the braces will be in the way of the power plant and I trust my welds that it won’t break apart. I decided to box in the upright piece to tie it all together and so I wouldn’t have somewhere for water to sit and create rust.

McMaster Carr has lovejoys the same O.D. But different I.D’s. Got one for the engine 1” and one for the pump 1/2” and the rubber piece.
