Master Bedroom Closet Remodel

Mary and I are trying to finish up a bunch of projects before the twins are born... which is why I told her the master bedroom closet was perfectly fine with the existing J-bar for hanging clothes. So, she proceeded to take my sawzall, cut the J-bar in half, ripped it out, then told me to remodel the closet.

After some disussion of design, she decided that she wanted a divided closet with enough space for two rows of hanging clothes, and a shelf at the top. My rebuttal was that it wasn't possible since we would be blocking the only access to the attic. Mary's final decision was, "figure it out"...

Here's what I came up with:

Thanks Ed! I'll count that compliment as double coming from you! Though it's not really evident from my Cub repair and tugging skills, I'm actually fairly handy in the wood shop. Lots of things have needed fixing since I bought my house 6 years ago.

Considering stories I've heard about her mother, so far Mary hasn't been all that bad. She probably would have torn the closet apart regardless. With that said, it's still probably best not to provoke her - especially if she's within reach of any tool that reciprocates, spins, or bludgeons!

Do you think "puppy kindergarten" will do, I can't get into any human classes, on short notice. Ed

I'm sure she'll appreciate the effort. That will at least cover the basics: sit, stay, and "heal" - which may come in handy to recover from any wounds!

WIfe had me do a similiar project this past winter. Easyclosets.com designed my closest. I printed off their plans. And then built it out of oak. Saved a lot money doing it this way. Here is a link in case you missed it.

Thanks, Tami! Wow, 5lbs already! Mary is doing well. She is at 25 weeks today and the boys are about 1.5 pounds each. Hope everything is going well for you also! Are you going to Cub Tug?

Thanks, John! I figured a video would explain things better than words. Our closet is so small it's hard to do anything with, plus with the attic access it makes it even harder to work with. I built a much more elaborate walk-in closet / storage shelving / pantry in the basement where we keep out of season clothes, because there is so little space in the bedroom.

Nice work on your closet as well! I think that's the size of my entire bedroom. We looked at the cedar planks, but decided to go with the chip board. The shelves are cabinet grade plywood with 1" oak facia board.
