Re: Update on Timber Frame - Got the Roof OnGot some good work done in the last month or so. A mild November and December really helped. As you can see I got the roof on and I have the timber frame porch mostly up. Just got to add the rafters, purlins, and metal and the main structure will be done. Not sure how much more I'll be able to count on favorable weather though....it's bound to turn ugly soon.

Re: Update on Timber Frame - Got the Roof OnCheck out this joint...it's called a "Stop Splayed Scarf with Wedges." It's a joint I used to join two timbers together to get the 16' top plate I needed on my porch. Fun to cut! As you can see....when your drive the wedges through the two beams, it spreads the beams against each other and locks them in place. Amazing, old fashioned, and just as solid and strong as any metal fastener!

Gotta keep saying it .. from one journeyman to another -- and yes you definitely rank in that category. Simply awesome work. That is beautiful. I love how you have built the barn using the old ways. I haven't seen a scarf joint like that probably in 20 years or more. See them very seldom in new construction and we have some companies here that specialize in log homes and post and beam construction the old way. You sure do encourage folks to give it a shot. Beautiful work. ![]() Confusion breeds Discussion which breeds Knowledge which breeds Confidence which breeds Friendship

Re: Update on Timber Frame - Got the Roof OnBlair that looks great. I just showed these pictures to a friend who is a very good carpenter who just finished a small timber frame garage for himself. His comment was that is one fantastic job you did. It is gorgeous. Both he and I are fans of old barns and timber frames are the heart of them.
