Well I got my Bell done all sanded down and painted, and got the concrete done Friday.
and it does look good, and got my Eagle repainted also. still have to redo the Eagle on top.
I paid $ 275.00 bucks for the Bell about 20 years ago and found out a few weeks ago it is worth about
$3500.00 so that is when I said to my self it is time to make it look good.
I call the company C.S.Bell and they said the company stopped making the big bells when WWII started
because of a shortage of metal, and never made any more because the demand for the big bells was just not there anymore, they still make the small farm bells and they can cost more than what I paid for the big # 26
church bell, When I told the owner of the C.S. Bell Company what I paid for the Bell he said, You Stolid It.
Well You know Me, I would Never Do Anything Like That. But I Guess I Did Get A Good Deal....

Chief, The unpainted bell looks like it is cast iron, but I thought most were bronze. Just wondering.

Your bell and layout sure look good. I hope it is safe, even with a dog around, those thieves are good at stealing anything of value. Did you put a light on it for night viewing?

Well I had this about ready to post and something went WAC - O and I lost everything, So I'm going to go make another Drink and try again.
OK here we go,,, The bell is cast iron and is all my 1953 Ferguson TO-30 can do to lift it on the end of the boom pole, so I don't think any one is going to run off with it, I hope ??
And the bell was made on 4, December 1907 They did make that size bell in Brass or bronze but mine is cast iron, and there is some Brass in the pours of the cast iron in it
Like they may have poured a brass one before they poured mine and some of the brass stayed in the mold.
And our acre and a quater is lit up like day light at night, I'm not scared of the dark, I just like to look out at night and see all of my Junk, LOL
We have five foot fence in the front and six foot in the back, and all gates locked at all times, we live in the county and it is a good neighborhood.

I'm no bell expert but I have two 20" ones and have done enough research to be dangerous.
C S Bell Co church bells of that size (#26) should match the number on the yoke to the diameter of the bell skirt which should be an even number in two inch increments. Maybe it's just the picture but that bell sure looks bigger than 26". Mine are #4's and are 20", the #4's and #'s smaller came in several different diameters. Once they got above a #4 they switched to the diameter of the bell cast into the yoke. Diameter is now the most common (standard? if you will) way of identifying a bell. Even when you look at a Sears catalog from before about 1930 (where most of the C S Bell Co bells were sold I have read) they are identified by diameter.
Commonly referred to as a cast iron bell I doubt that it's really cast iron. It's most likely cast steel, sometimes called a steel alloy that C S Bell called crystalline metal. It had a mellower tone and better pitch than the cast iron bells others made and it quickly became THE bell to have. It was a special secret blend that they guarded the receipe to like the Colonel's 11 herbs and spices .
I take it that the date 4 December 1907 is cast/impressed on the inside of the bell. Not rare to have the pour date but not real common either.
Value wise I have no idea if that number is right. The big bronze bells usually are quite expensive, steel alloy not as much but the bigger they are the more limited the market but also the rarity. It's really a roll of the dice in my opinion. If you really want to know there's a place in MI that deals in big bells and will do an appraisal for $95. I would think you would be like me, I'm not selling so I really don't need to know exactly what it's worth. I would be satisfied with the $3500 estimate.

Just fix the clapper where it is near to impossible to remove an it will be its own alarm, LOL! I have a #4 CS Bell. It came from my Dad's family farm. Dad got it in '53 when the farm was divided amongst the heirs. Painted silver till rusted, I had it blasted and repainted black for the Bicentenial. Called CS Bell about color and the girl said satin black. You could hear the distress on the other end when told it was silver. Want to repaint this time with brass/bronze color on bell and rest satin black. May even paint a faux crack on the side. Mine uses an A frame sitting on the roof of our home. It has a chain with a ball bearing attached for easier ringing. New Year's Eve I slung the clapper off ringing in the new year! If Anybody has a pattern for a #3 bell yoke, I would like to have a copy. Is there a site for CS Bell pix, I have some to contribute. Not sure of terminology, what I need is piece bell sits in on post. Thanks.
