Gantry

Got a project that you are working on that is not a tractor? Maybe a barn to hold your tractors or just fun stuff like woodworking, glass, tools, sheds, gardens, custom implements, etc., this is the place to talk about it.

Gantry

Postby Chipmaker » Tue Apr 12, 2016 7:38 am

Well I am in the process of disassembling a Cub and need an extra helper to take the engine off. I looked at buying a engine hoist but can't see spending $150 on one form Harbor Frieght (I don't even like to say the name) so I got in touch with my dad, he keeps everything. He says it comes from growing up poor. I had some 3" square tubing to use for legs 1/4" wall and I already had the trolly and chain hoist I bought at an auction 10+ years ago. I looked at heavy duty wheels and decided against the whole project because I could get a engine hoist for what wheels would cost and not to mention time. So dad says "I think I got some wheels" so back on track. (Thanks for not throwing stuff out dad). He even had a heavy piece of I-beam but the top leg has been cut off of it. It has a heavy enough web on it I am not worried about it bending, plus it's 1/2" thick, I think it will hold what my old chain hoist will pick up. So here is some pictures. I welded some of it together at work then welded it on the floor in my shop and took the 601 and boompole and up-righted it. We are ready for Cub engine removal and whatever else. I made it wide enough to get stuff out or in my truck if I need to.

Looks like it will safely lift what you want to. Good Job. I like "making do" with what you or your dad have on hand.

Note to BR and Mr E: check out the braces or "gussets". :) :) :)

Good job, but it looks like you have the same problem I would. Now that it is there not enough room to roll it around.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Yes. My shop is small. That is one reason I went with a gantry instead of an engine hoist. When I get done with it I will take the hoist off and it will be living outdoors. Dad said aren't you gonna paint it? I said I will one day, I need to use it right now, lol. I may do that before it goes outdoors but that will be after the Cub is together again.

Built one, shortly after getting into cub repairs. Very handy tool!
