Any interest in a Central Maine CubFest?

Postby Our Pass Thyme » Wed Mar 16, 2016 5:18 pm

Hi,
I corresponded with Dennis earlier today and he suggested and encouraged me to post this note to see if there might be interest in A Maine CubFest here in Central Maine. I am not sure what all is involved in hosting an event but I think that would work itself out since I understand that the CubFests are informal gatherings. No, I have never been to one, but I have looked over the photos from them posted here, seen a few videos, talked to a couple people who have been to one, and I know they are well worth attending. Here is my facebook page where you can see an aerial view of my vegetable farm's layout - https://www.facebook.com/Our-Pass-Thyme ... 956626492/

Sarah and I will attend if there is one. And tow along a Cub. Can bring along some stuffed quahogs because folks tend to get hungry at Cubfests. Set it up, I know people will attend. Looks like a great place to host one. Would there be a place to pitch a tent if it is a two day event Saturday/ Sunday morning?

Actually there would be several places to set up tents as I have a nice little stream on the south side of the property. I will be working on the logistics over the weekend while making maple syrup. My wife makes an awesome Italian stuffed shells dish, and if it was a two day thing, the next morning could feature a pancake breakfast with our home made maple syrup.

Good to see someone new considering a CubFest. As a host, you'll need to think about the same things as if you were inviting anybody else over for a day or two...toilet facilities, food, place to stay and what you're going to do. Just basic things. To what degree you plan is up to you. The only thing special might be a basic shop to be able to work on a Cub tractor.

If you decide to do it, post a new thread in the CubFest section giving everyone advanced notice of where, when, duration and anything else you want them to know. Don't be shy about putting out a can for donations; CubFests cost the host some cash.

Wish you success in your plans! :coffee:

Tom,

I hope this pans out. The only Cubfest that was official in N.E. fizzled out a couple of years ago. There is a good core of Cub enthusiasts from the New England area that would probably attend. Look for the dates of other tractor shows in the NE area to make sure that the date you pick does not coincide with those dates.
Cubfests do cost money and as Stanton mentioned there is nothing wrong with putting out a collection jug to offset your costs. Do have space to work on projects? :D

Hi,
Right now there are two dates I am considering, one coinsides with the Whoopie Pie Festival and the other coinsides with the Piscataquis County Fair. The Fair has a modest display of "Old Iron" mainly Farmall powered threshers and other tractors pre-60's.
Both events are within 20 miles.

As far as a shop, I usually ask my wife to remove her car from the garage to work on my tractors or vehicles.
Smaller jobs are completed in my basement workshop as the door is just 48'' wide.
I would have at least one demonstration involving my "electrolysis" rust removal technique.

I have ordered 300 pounds of potatoes and weather dependent, I am sure there will be a hilling potato demonstration and corn cultivation.

I hope to have mouldboard plowing and maybe cutter bar space available...??

I hope to convince TM Tractors to attend also.

I had no idea that Cubfest Northeast fizzeled out. At least I still plan on having it in October as always.

Perhaps there is technical distinction between New England and North East for the "N.E."?

Connecticut CubFest at Zagray Farm fizzled out. I was referring to New England Cubfests. Not Cubfest Northeast.

Tom, it looks like you have room for it. Go for it. Here is a site with a few FAQ's that might help you. http://www.cubfest.com/
It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

Hi Ron,
Maine Whoopie Pie Festival is June 25th - http://mainewhoopiepiefestival.com/ . But I looked at a long range calendar and it shows cloudy showery weather for that weekend.
Piscataquis Valley Fair is usually the last weekend in August - http://www.piscataquisvalleyfair.com/

I have decided that with my growing schedule here on my little farm that the second weekend in July would fit best here. The new red potatoes will just be ready and everything should be planted by then.

I will be announcing by Monday as I hope to catch up with my neighbor this weekend. I will be just doing a 1 day event to work out the kinks, unless there might be a lot interest and others that may be able to help out with the planning...

Sounds like a great idea!!

Usually I don't get up that way except for 'vacations'; snowmobile, fishing, white water, etc. But will surely try to make it.

Buzzard Wing,
I can guess you didn't come North this winter for Snowmobiling since the ground was barely covered this winter.
I hope you can make it.
Seems to be more out of state interest than in state interest at this early stage, I will be working hard to make it worth the trip!
