carburetor

Postby Joey » Mon Apr 24, 2006 9:33 am

I have a carburetor for a Ford 2000 offset that I need to clean and rebuild. What's the best way to clean the carb? I vaguely remember something about soaking in vinegar? What's the best primer to use? Thanks!

Joey - carburetor cleaner is available from better automotive parts stores such as NAPA. You can buy it in a gallon can with a strainer basket which will allow you to soak the carb and not have to fish around for parts.

I don't pretend to know anything about paints and primers but I believe the choice of primer would depend on your choice of finish paint. If you know what you are going to use for the final finish, see what primer is recommended for it.

I heard vinegar is bad for the aluminum. I use carb cleaner from walmart or autozone.

After dipping and cleaning with carb cleaner, do the pieces have to be rinsed off before priming and painting?

The body would have to be rinsed and prepped for paint. However, I never saw a carb that really held paint well. Most of them peel almost immediately. Some have talked about trying to powder coat them or use clear sealer. I just leave them natural.

I've used Chem-Dip in the paint can w/basket, and it works great at cleaning up really dirty carbs. But, you MUST take all non-metallic parts off the carb.
