Muffler Problem
I have a small garden tiller. When I cranked it last week for the first time this spring/summer it would not rev up above a fast idle and it had no power. I suspected a dirty carb reducing gas flow into the cylinder. However, a screen located at the junction of the exaust port and muffler was almost totally plugged with carbon and this seems to be the problem. I want to let the muffler and screen soak overnight in a fluid to dissolve the carbon. Kerosene or diesel fuel are easy to obtain. Would either be effective in dissolving the carbon? If not, what would you recommend? Thanks, Dan

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

I cleaned it up enough to be able to use it by spraying it with Seafoam, then scraping the screen with a knife blade and, finally, using a pin to punch holes through the carbon to allow exhaust gases to escape. The screen is not removable, making it difficult to soak overnight. Maybe placing a sponge on the screen and saturating it with Seafoam would dissolve the remaining carbon. Thanks, Dan

Russell: I will start adding Seafoam when I get it cleaned up. The screen is recessed into the muffler, making it difficult to reach. Also, I can only clean on one side. With an inexpensive cleaner, I would have immersed the muffler and let it set for awhile. Seafoam is a little too expensive for the volume which would be needed to immerse. Thanks to each of you who responded. Dan

Hi Dan. Just a thought, but alot of guys use oven cleaner to clean stuff. It's foamy and would cling to the screen. Then maybe a few squirts of sea-foam would flush it. Just a thought, Rick
That just gave me an idea. I'll have to get some and try it on my weed eater muffler screens that plug up
