Briggs 5hp engine toast

Postby kinelbor » Sun Jul 09, 2006 2:14 pm

Well yesterday I was out for a nice evening ride on my chopper. It had been about 85 all day (hot hot for us) It was one of those perfect evenings for a ride. Until I lost power and then came to a screeching halt. I new right away that it might be try to seize. I did my best to slowly keep turning the engine to keep it from locking up. I didnt have any oil or I would have walked it into the cylinder. I kepted turning it for a few minutes to be sure that it wasnt going to lock. Then I started walkin home.... I pulled the side cover off of it today. Whewww, she is toast. Apperently the oil slinger broke off. Here are some pics of what happen when it stops getting oil. The oil is a real dark grey, and full of metal. Guess thats how she goes when you get into building motorcycles in your garage 8)

Niki,

Condolences on the Briggs....but, on the bright side.....shouldn't be too awfully hard to find another one.

They do break, after all, and are not really intended for motor vehicle use.....LOL........

I don't think your engineering is faulty....just the engine.

The only time we blew up briggs motors like that we would disconnect the govenors on the mini bikes to speed them up. We took off 4hp motors and put 8hp motors in its place. I had to put heavier jack shafts in too because the thinner shafts were twisting. My son would air condition the block everytime the rod let go. Then we would get another clunker and start all over. Once he complained about shrapnel comming from the motor when the rod came out.
I'm technically misunderstood at times i guess its been this way my whole life so why should it change now.

I purchased the cheapest 8hp briggs motor for my log splitter about 25 years ago. It had the alumimum cylinder and the dealer who sold it to me told me it wouldn't last one year running wide open on a log splitter. I would split between 50 to 100 cords per year of firewood and run it 10 hrs per day wide open. I changed the oil after each day of use and sometimes put some two stroke gas in the tank to keep the uppers well lubed too. The only thing i had happen was the piston ring gaps all lined up one day and it fumigated the yard with oil smoke. After putting in new rings around year 15 we ran it another 10 years. I did have to change the rear output oil seal once too. Right now its still running with the second owner on another log splitter. Get a good motor and keep the oil changed and use good oil in the hot weather use 30w oil and in the cold weather i used 10w oil.(10 to 20 degrees)

Do you mean wide open throttle, or full governed speed? This 5hp engine without a governer can get about 6000rpm no load. I think I had it under 5000rpm when it threw the slinger.
