Am I missing something here? Thayt seems like a very rare engine, is it a small hit and miss type/ Also appears to be in super shape. Is that a legit IH motor or is something miss identified

His description is pretty accurate, excpet maybe his comments about how rare and exceptional his particular engine is. His serial number tracks to 1940. His price isn't horribly out of line but I would probably have started with a lower opening bid. It is just about impossible to go to any decent sized engine show and not see several of them. It is a governed engine, not a hit and miss.

For more details, crack open the March-April '05 issue of Red Power.

You can usually find/buy 1.5-2.5 hp LA or LB IH engines at the Tri-State Swap meet or the Tri-State Show (Portland, IN) for less than half of his opening bid. I paid $325 for the last one I bought and it was a running engine that only needed paint. The tall water hopper is not real common, but not necessarly rare either, I don't think. I guess it all depends on someone's meaning of rare.

Anyone attending the last Cubfest or Cub pulling event should remember Rick P's buddy George tooling around in that neat little contraption for 2. Its got the same powerplant on it. Rick said he found it on Eapy.

Thanks Paul for the thought. I have seen lots of them over my 27 years of collecting engines.

Jeff,
It may be rare in his part of the country. But you would have to think that he would have wanted it to run well before he listed it in order to not have to disclose the problems and drive the price down.
