dead super H - a bit of a head scratcher

the farm's super H failed to start for the second time this year. so, dragged it up on my trailer a couple of months ago and it's been sitting in my shop.
we needed to reseat a new rear tire that someone installed without any veg oil, and replace the front tires, steering wheel, rebuild the carb (float problem) and some misc other things. took care of all that. but still no start.

when it failed in july, one of the guys swapped out the distributer for a 'reportedly' rebuilt mag from our farm repair shop. I adjusted t timing and it ran good.

checked the following - mag for spark at the coil using a spark plug. compression 100-110 all cylinders, and carb rebuilt. still no go.

got back to the task last night, Dad was by. tried starting fluid - nothing
rechecked the mag - spark at coil wire. checked for spark at the plug...nothing.

what we found was that the rotor was stripped where the plastic was splined to the gear. so it was not turning all the time. no timing.

took the mag off my W6, installed it on the H, and fired it up. now i will send this mag over to the magneto shop for a proper rebuild

so, take nothing for granted. check, check, check.

What happened to the mag or dist you took off. That may still be good.

Art - It's like you say. You never know unless you do it yourself, and even then sometimes you can't be sure.

my suspicion is that the existing distributer was good. the coil on the tractor was the original ih coil, and that is no doubt what was bad. i'll check it out next time I get a chance.
we have 20 to 30 people doing different projects, so it sometimes gets confusing as to what was done and why.
Our club Pres is in the mag rebuilding business, and does the club equipment as a donation, so i'll get one back for the W6 in a month or so.

Before i got my cub I used to use the neighbors C with a Woods.. Stopped for lunch one day and no start after eating, Found the rivits holding the metal stub on the rotor had given up the ghost. This was on a sat & I just made it to the dealer just before they closed for half day. I got a coil, points, dist cap, condensor and rotor. Used every thing except the coil.
Three years later the coil went while I was mowing fortunately I had one that I hadn't used the first time. A nunber of years later the rad leaked. Took it off soldered it. A couple of years later the exhaust pepe fell off at the manifold. Replaced that with a piece of 1 1/4 inch pipe. Then no spark and it was the same trouble with the rotor again. In between some where the friction discs for a blade wore out and i replaced it with leather and a bearing let go in one of the spindles. I would change oil, filter and grease too, George said I don't have to maintanance you do it all. Between the two of us we kept about 60 acres cut as lawn so it wasn't as if the tractor was always in the shed.
