I was given this tractor by a friend. It now belongs to my daughter and she is helping me to get it running and wants it painted pink. It has a 16 hp twin cylinder briggs engine, hydrostatic transmission and a brinly hitch on back. The model number label says FS42-7050-0C B042D. There is no name anywhere that I can see and I can't find anything similar to it pictured on the net. Has anyone seen one of these?

Brian:

What it looks like is an MTD Garden Tractor that was probably made as a House Brand. It looks very much like my buddy Gord's 16 hp MTD from the late 70's early 80's. Even though his is an actual MTD, back when an MTD yard tractor was actually a pretty good item, MTD made similar models for Eaton, Simpson Sears aka in the US as Sears Roebuck and probably many more such as Montgomery Ward, Wal-Mart and countless others. I remember how difficult it was trying to find a manual for a Co-Op Turf Trac 10/32 Ride on mower. It was built by MTD but MTD had no documentation for it. The closest I could come was something similar but not really close. It can get very confusing as MTD made units for so many folks. At least that is what it looks like to me. I may be offbase, or not. :big give up:

Rudi is correct. It is a house brand MTD. I have one that we purchased new in 1981 called a TurfTrac sold by LandMark. I still have it and the book. I can make a copy of the book if needed. MTD still has parts for them. The week point seemed to be the fron axle. It is a stamped steel axle with a single bolt. Over the years we have welded washers to either side of the bolt hole to keep it from wallowing out.

I already had a hunch that mtd made this tractor. I called the 1-800 number on their website today and they were extremely helpful and it is unreal what info they have. The gentleman I spoke with looked in their "archives" and determined what I have is a MTD tractor made from 1985-1988. It was marketed by Gambles, American Hardware and "other hardware manufacturers", which they told me was most likely Ace Hardware and True Value. They gave me the official model number of 145832 and I was able to download the manual off of their website.

The weak link in the machine looks to me to be the peerless hydrostatic transmission. I know they are not nearly as tough as the transmission used in the cub cadets.

thanks, I should have remembered that. I plugged in the model number and found a couple manuals. Glad you were able to find manuals for your latest new to you addition. :D
