WHAT'S IT CALLED

Postby Brent » Mon Jan 31, 2005 1:19 am

There was a tractor made, in the teens or twenties maybe even the thirties, that was four wheel drive and was operated with rains. It was designed so farmers could continue to use their horse drawn implements. Anyone know what they were called and who the manufacturer was?

Your description sounds like to me that it could have been the Clydesdale-Hayburner :?: . That is the only 4X4 model that I can think of that were steered with reins.

I have seen video of this tractor on one of the Classic Tractors programs on RFD TV. It is in the parade of power in one of the big shows. I can't recall the name though. They demonstrated the operation of the tractor including backing up just by using the reins.

I think it was the "Power Horse". I saw the same program that Big Dog did. The guy said that only a few were made and there was no standard color, when they built them they used whatever color they had.

Best,
Mike

Bigdog and Mike,

:D That's the one and Mike that's the name. I saw one at a show last year I think it had a Hercules motor in it. My old mind just couldn't remember the name. I would love to get my hands on one but I'm probably dreaming. Don't imagine many were made.

I've seen a couple of what must have been about the last of them. I believe it had an AC B engine and sheet metal. Last one was at the show in Camp Verde(?) AZ.

We have the biggest show in California coming up in April. The one I saw there last year will more than likely be back this year. If anyone is interested, I'll take some pictures of it and post them.

Sounds great. I would like to see that tractor guided by reins.

Since these were at Quartzsite several years back, I suspect the orange one was the same one I mentioned from Camp Verde.

Jim,

:D Thanks for the pictures. The orange one looks like the same one I saw at last years Tulare, Ca. show. Looks like the same fellow driving it too. If it is he must really get around! I seem to remember a green one to. Might have been two at that show.

There was also one Named "The Iron Horse" Made in 1921, by Samson Iron Works in Stocton Ca. Another company that built them was Rein Drive of Toronte. The also were made for farmers like the "Amish" as long as the horse pulled the machine it was ok. "Jack"
