Saved one from the scrap yard.

Sun Nov 06, 2011 4:43 pm

Saved a 1950 John Deere A from the scrap yard Saturday. I know it is green but it sure did not need to go to the scrap yard.
Will post pictures when I get it home. I have to come up with a rear rim and some tires that hold air before I can get it home. Luckily it is only a mile down the road. Makes it easier when I forget tools. It has not run in almost 20 years but ran when it was parked. I was needing a winter project.

When it comes to saving antique tractors, brand does't matter. When they are gone they are gone. I know most here can appreciate
old iron no matter what color they come in. I have my grandfathers John Deere B and love it . I wish I had his Farmall A. I know that
when you get that A running your grin won't fit thru the the front door.

Pulled the new project home on friday. Put it in the shop on saturday and started draining fluids and spraying rusty bolts.
Hope to have it running by next fall.

PO was an uncle who owned it for 40 + years. I had asked him about selling the tractor acouple of years ago but he said he was going to fix it up. I asked him again last week because he had not done anything with it and I figured he was going to scrap it. He said ok as long as he gets to drive it after I fix it. 8)

Does it have a Roll-O-Matic?

We have my grandfather's '51 B JD out back. It's in bad shape. It would probably be easier to just use it for parts to restore a better one.

I have always wanted a little JD H. They're almost as cute as a Cub....

Yes it does.

Also came with a few unwanted wasp nests and dirt dobber nests.

Reason I ask is years ago, they broke the pedistal on this old B we have. They couldn't find a used rollomatic for it so they put a regular tricycle (two wheel) pedistal back under it.

The A's are very cool--lots of grunt! I would hate to have to listen to one run all day, though.

Very nice find!

Based on the picture it appears to be in pretty good shape. Should make a great project. Can't wait to see the pictures of the finished product. :D :D
