Saved one from the scrap yard.

Saved a 1950 John Deere A from the scrap yard Saturday. I know it is green but it sure did not need to go to the scrap yard.
Will post pictures when I get it home. I have to come up with a rear rim and some tires that hold air before I can get it home. Luckily it is only a mile down the road. Makes it easier when I forget tools. It has not run in almost 20 years but ran when it was parked. I was needing a winter project.

When it comes to saving antique tractors, brand does't matter. When they are gone they are gone. I know most here can appreciate
old iron no matter what color they come in. I have my grandfathers John Deere B and love it . I wish I had his Farmall A. I know that
when you get that A running your grin won't fit thru the the front door.

Pulled the new project home on friday. Put it in the shop on saturday and started draining fluids and spraying rusty bolts.
Hope to have it running by next fall.

PO was an uncle who owned it for 40 + years. I had asked him about selling the tractor acouple of years ago but he said he was going to fix it up. I asked him again last week because he had not done anything with it and I figured he was going to scrap it. He said ok as long as he gets to drive it after I fix it. 8)

Does it have a Roll-O-Matic?

We have my grandfather's '51 B JD out back. It's in bad shape. It would probably be easier to just use it for parts to restore a better one.

I have always wanted a little JD H. They're almost as cute as a Cub....

Yes it does.

Also came with a few unwanted wasp nests and dirt dobber nests.

Reason I ask is years ago, they broke the pedistal on this old B we have. They couldn't find a used rollomatic for it so they put a regular tricycle (two wheel) pedistal back under it.

The A's are very cool--lots of grunt! I would hate to have to listen to one run all day, though.

Very nice find!

Based on the picture it appears to be in pretty good shape. Should make a great project. Can't wait to see the pictures of the finished product. :D :D

It has been over two years since this was pulled home and here is a up dated picture. Plan A was to have it done October of 13. Barn additions, storm shelters, new house roof and work keep getting in the way of this project. Plan B is to have it done for the local tractor show in October 14, but the better half wants a deck added to the front of the house this year. I guess I am going to go to plan C.

Well it has been 3 years since I pulled this home. It is still not close to running but at least the project is being reassembled.
After a medical episode in February, new washing machine, and central air unit repair the tractor fund took a beating. Work has been getting in the way also. This is the busiest year I have had in the mower repair business. Plus repairing mowers and tractors at home has kept the JDA collecting dust. Hope to have it done by next falls local show. Already have two tractors to work on before spring. I also need to do some minor repairs to the Cub.

I have either got to clone myself or stop working on other peoples tractors. I do not think either one is going to happen though.

That is going to be a great tractor when you get it done, Rodney! I love those old John Deere's. The first tractor I remember is my Dads 1949 John Deere A. I used to ride on the finder while he plowed, disked, culitvated an plowed snow. It was the tractor I learned to drive on and was really disappointed when he sold is to get something bigger. Thanks for the update and keep us posted.....

Looking good! I am IH to the bone but it's good to see a few putter-putters. (I still would like to own a little H one day)

I totally know about "life" getting in the way of projects. Every time I think I will have a little extra mad money to devote to a tractor project, another bill pops up.....

The nice thing is the project has taken so long you've forgotten about all the money you've spent on it.

If you went and blew through the project in a few months, you'd remember every dime you spent and realize that you belong in a loony bin.

Keep going on it. You'll get it done eventually. Definitely worth saving.

Try listening to one all day without a muffler. Been there. As dad's loan-a-kid I drove whatever I was given. :D Vern

I grew up driving red, would have probably stayed red but this was an Uncles and I could not see it getting scrapped.

You mean your not suppose to keep track of expenses ? I do not have an exact figure but a close one. The nickname for this project is the "Money Pit". I enjoy fixing stuff. I don't need a computer to fix old tractors.

I am in to deep to stop now. The only part that I have never done is paint one. This is going to be a first for me.
I enjoy following your thread on your H. I have worked on 2 H's for people and my Dad has 2.
My next project will have more than 2 cylinders.
