Farmall Cub

Just met a fellow who has a 1939 Ford 9N and wants it gone. Said he'll take scrap value for it. Ran a few years ago, and that's about all he said about it.

Historically, I've been and IH guy, but I've worked on my share of Simplicity, JD, and Wheel Horse lawn equipment (along with the Cubs and lo-boys) so I really didn't give it much thought when we were talking. Now that I've thought about it a bit, I'm thinking of going ahead and grabbing it.

I really could go either way. I dont' need it. Don't need another project. Certainly don't need to find space for it (it will have to sit outside). What are everyone's thoughts?

Bill I scrapped a Ferguson a few months back and it brought about $250. That is about the same size as a 9N.

$ 250.- $ 400. would be my guess for this part of the country (VA).

My in-laws neighbor sold me their 9N with cracked block or head (coolant in the oil) for $300. I loaded it on a trailer and dropped it off at a tractor consignment auction and it sold for $700. Well worth my time and effort. It paid for some more tractor parts.

If you’re asking if you should get it, I think you know the answer, you won’t get a lot of people here that are going to talk you out of it.

I love the looks of the old Fords, if I had somewhere to put it and had the opportunity to get it for scrap price I would own it. My fondest memories are riding on the fender of my uncle’s 8N and 9N when I would visit him on the farm in the summer.

If you’re asking about a fair scrap price, base weight appears to be around 3.375 lbs., what is the going rate in your area?

Thanks guys. Guess I should have been more clear. I figured $200 to $300 was probably fair. I just can't decide if it's worth fooling with. I know, gotta take advantage of deals like this when they come along. I just wasn't thinking that way when we were talking. I told him I'd think about it, so it's still available. Unfortunately, he's in the scrap business, demolition actually, so I'm sure he knows exactly what the scrap price is.

If you have not plans for the 9N other then let it set outside. I wouldn't do it. You will have to move it one or two times at a minimum, costing time and fuel related expenses.

If you pay the approximate scrap value, estimated at about 1 1/2 tons with the tires removed and all fluids drained - there is no money in it for you.

My reference shows the 9N weighing 3070 lbs. Local scrap dealer advertises paying $230- a ton.

Bill, I know what you mean. I have Dad's 1940 Ford in my barn. It's the last tractor left from his estate (Mr E got the Super M). I would have sold it too, but I didn't start it for a couple of years and the last time I tried it wouldn't go. It's still inside so I'll get it going one of these days. Like I need another project.

He bought it at auction about 55 years ago and it was so handy for so many things. Rake hay, move wagons, rotary hoe corn and beans and a loader tractor for hauling manure. Still have the loader. No live power or hydraulics and no power steering. Dad would wear himself out cleaning out the barn. I was only 9 or 10 when he got it and I claimed it as mine. It has an overdrive and has a mean road gear. It isn't the monster that the Super M is but I sure have an attachment to it.

Go check it out. If it ran a few years ago, it might not be hard to get it running again. If you can get it running, put it out front and stick a for sale sign on it. If you get it for scrap price you should make a substantial profit with it running.

I'd already have it home if I had the spare change! Like Al said, can't take much to get it running.

I would buy it and then decide what I am going to do with it.

Bill, I think you should take a look at it.....It may be worth more than scrap if it is indeed a true early 9N. I own a '39 Ford 9N SN#144. The 1st 575-600 are rare and collectable, providing the original parts are still there. The 1st ones had a lot of cast aluminum parts; dash, transmission & PTO covers, the rear hubs/axles are one piece cast & are smooth hubs, and of course a cast aluminum hood & grill. The axles alone of that style can sell for $250-$300 as I had to purchase one for my restoration as the original had been broken and replaced with later axle.

That's pretty far for a road trip for me, but if it is complete and indeed an early model, it may be worth some money.

I'd like to see some pics or at least find out what SN# it is, as another collector in Ill owns SN#16, and there is currently no other 9N's registered with a SN# between his & mine.

I'm looking for rear worklight and road light for mine, if yours has them, I would like to buy them
