Got diggin' around in the photo box again. I found this one of Dad and one of his REOs hauling a load of hay off to somewhere back in 1941.

Those bales look like they are all 3 wire, which I have never seen. I bet they weighed a few pounds.

When I was very young, we hauled loose hay to the barn and in the fall a fellow with a stationary wire baler came to the farm and baled the hay. The baler was set on the barn floor and the loose hay was thrown down to the baler. If you think picking up bales , baled with string is rough on the hands, try picking up a wire tied bale. Thanks for sharing the pic, brings back many memories of days gone by and folks not with us anymore.

We used to buy loads of hay from Upstate New York, one big load of those wire-tied bales, and you'd have enough wire to fix things around the farm for a whole year !

Barnyard, Do you know if these were baled with a stationary baler? I wouldn't want to try and lift one. My memory doesn't go back that far. The worst bales I ever tried to lift were out of an old Case hand wire tye. They were about 80 pounds which was bigger than me. About 1950 - 1953? Thanks for sharing. I do find old farm equipment and methods interesting. Vern :thanx:

Vern, these were baled about ten years before my time so I couldn't tell you. Best I remember is the mid fifties when I rode on the hay wagon pulled behind a baler.

Here is a picture of my Grandpa, uncle Carl and Dad (waving) hauling in the hay back in the day. My Dad is now 87 years old and still a die hard John Deere man.

Bill, I didn't really mean that you would have personal knowledge. I don't remember 1941 and I'm sure I have a few years on you. I was looking at Wendel's Encyclopedis of American Farm Implements and wondering what monster put out those bales. I was thinking more along the lines of a family member having told you stories of "way back when" or other pictures or notes on pictures. Maybe I could have been a lot more clear. Vern
