Went to a tractor show today at which was this planter.

I can understand the seed cans and the fertilizer cans but what are the small can between the fertilizer cans and the two containers behind the press wheels used for? I doubt the small can holds a gallon.

There were two of these one of which had 246-247 decaled on it. I googled this model but wasn't able to find one equipped this way. Vern

Yep, The small hopper in between the planter units was used for applying granular insecticide to try to prevent wire worms, billbugs, etc. in corn. When I was really little we had a two row JD planter with a Gandy unit on it, set up in a similar manner, but it was not IH. As I recall they were putting out Furidan with it.

The hoppers at the very back would have probably been used to put out a granular herbicide right over the row. In the early 80s my dad had a set of four JD 71 (similiar to an IH 185) unit planters on a toolbar that had two hoppers just like that on them. In that case one was for insecticide and one was for herbicide.
