new toy 1947 john deere b PIC HEAVY
well I swear craigslist is going to be the death of me. I found this old john deere on there last week and took the plunge and bought it. The motor is Free and turns easy. the Previous owner drained all the oil out of it before they parked it for some reason. I pulled the valve cover and they all move when I roll the motor over. the tractor is in over all original condition and complete except for at some point in its life someone cut the hood and installed a strait pipe I am used to cubs so is there anything I should look over before I try and start it other than filling it to the proper oil lever? the only thing in the crank case right now is cobb webs. I am playing heck trying to pull the radiator to tear it apart and clean the chunks of rust out of it. I am also debating on switching over to a distributor vs a mag. anyway here are the pics

Re: new toy 1947 john deere b PIC HEAVY
Great find!! I've got a soft spot for those B's. Easy to work on (except taking the hood off). To bad someone found that out and hacked up the hood. Are those cob webs in the crank case? No Roll-O-Matic, bummer, but it is a nice looking tractor and should be a great project.
When I bought my '52, it was stuck so I pulled the cylinder off and beat the pistons out. One piston was broken. It looked like it had been stuck for a long time. Anyway, new bores, valve grinding and new hardened exhaust seats and it was ready to fire up. Crank and bearings were good so I just adjusted the bearings and changed the oil and it was ready to go. Prior to firing it up I changed the other fluids too. When I pulled the drain plug on the tranny, oil started filling the bucket underneath. Suddenly I heard a clunk in the bottom of the bucket which turned out to be a gear tooth. Fortunately the tranny is easy to fix on the old Waterloo two cylinders and parts are easy to find and not to expensive. I ended up replacing 3 gears and some bearings. Once done it would pull 2-16" bottoms in 4th gear.
Here is a shot of it pulling a pine tree that I'd just cut down in the yard.

Re: new toy 1947 john deere b PIC HEAVY **Progress**
well I think im making headway or I could be going backwards. I noticed 2 holes in the intake/exhaust manifold, so I figured id remove it an order a new one. this leads to taking off the governor housing which is full of rust that will have to be cleaned out. after I removed the manifold there was a lot of rust chips and crap down there that I had to try and get out with no luck. so I figured off with its head! now looking back I should have done a compresson test before removing it below is what it looks like tonight. the cyl walls are pretty smooth but are not scored and I don't see any hash marks, time for a rebuild?
I spy something interesting
if you look toward the flywheel you can see the rust from the governor housing
there is oil on the cyl walls, im just glad I got the trash out before I tried to start it

I was almost 14 years old before I knew they made tractors with foot clutches.

Same here! I started driving a JD "A" steering between hay bales. My legs were not long enough to reach a foot clutch, but the hand clutch with it's limited brake, enabled me to drive while the men loaded bales.
I can still bale with my "B" ,using my foot to kick it out of gear, and re-engaging the hand clutch to simulate live PTO in heavy slugs of hay.
If there is enough grade to allow the tractor and baler to roll forward, this is seamless. You would think the tractor had live PTO.
Best,
Mike

Good looking project. I bought a 50 JDA in Nov 2011. I hope to have it done by Oct 2014.
My project is in a little rougher shape than yours.

I almost bought this tractor myself. Me and the guy selling it were $100 bucks apart on it. Keep us updated. I'm just over here in Cumberland Olred so if you get it going I may just have to come over and have a look
