Farmall Cub

I own a 1955 R190 which was a fire truck, but converted to a dump truck. I had a bunch of trees cut at my place so I wanted to use the truck to help with the clean up. I got the truck started but then noticed that I don't seem to have any brakes. I sure don't remember this being the case when I parked the truck last fall. I opened the master cylinder and noticed it was low. So I put fluid in but still don't seem to have any pressure. I'm not sure if this truck had vacuum brakes on it or not. Also just as frustrating is that I used the dump box once, and now it won't dump. It's a PTO driven pump. It might be low on hydrolic fluid.

Any suggestions?

Vacuum assist so that the driver doesn't have to press so hard on the pedal to stop the truck.

Fill the master cylinder, step on brakes, have some one check each wheel cylinder for a leak when brake pedal depressed. Also the brake lines. If brake pedal gets hard when depressed and stays hard, got brakes. If pedal gets sort of hard and then slowly moves to floor board, hydraulic fluid leak.

PTO pump. check fluid level. Check to see if pto pumps drive shaft is engaged when it's suppose to be in operation.

The funny thing about the brakes is that the pedal has no resistance at all. I know it's connected, but just does not seem to be doing anything. I have checked for leaks and see nothing. I checked each wheel and they all appear to have fluid.

Yea the PTO is spinning. Like stated it worked just fine once, and then stopped working after that. I'm pretty sure it is just low on fluid.

Truck could have any one of about 7 or 8 different braking systems. Check local library for a brake service manual containing information on this specific truck. Once the braking system is identified and diagrammed, you should be able to locate the problem.

Call the local Case/IH dealership and inquire about the braking system.

If you know the pedal is connected, and there is no resistance, I would guess that the piston is stuck in the depressed position. This of course is presuming that the booster (if there is one) is frame mounted and not between the pedal and the cylinder.

It probably has stuck/damaged or cracked cups in booster unit!---they will do that if not used regularly --- if lines/wheel cylinders/ etc dont show any external leakage,---sounds like a booster re-build would solve the problem,! thanks; sonny

That truck doesn't have air over hyd. assist brake system does it ? If it does you will get no pedal till you have air pressure up.At least that's how a old Reo 6x6 the local fire dept had worked. Seen several new guys gona drive the"Duce n a half" but couldn't get it out the door because "the brakes are out"

Don't know anything about "air over", but if normal hydraulic brakes, your master cylinder needs a rebuild. There should be at least some resistance felt if everything is bled correctly.

This truck does have hydrolic assist brakes. I was able to get the brakes working by adding LOTS of fluid to the tank under the passenger side of the truck, and then fiddling to get the air out. As soon as I did that brakes started working normally.

The PTO was just a broken sheer pin so that was easy. The brakes were more difficult, but hey that is the way these things go.
