Samson Model M

Postby Urbish » Tue Dec 23, 2014 7:30 am

Does anybody here know anything about Samson tractors? I searched and it has been a few years since anybody discussed them. My father-in-law has a line on two Samson Model M's. One is a 1919 and the other is a 1920. Both run, but the one needs a magneto rebuild. The guy who is selling them is a magneto expert and will take care of that. Otherwise, they are in great condition.

I've found very little about these units. I do know that the Model M was made from 1918-1923 in Janesville, WI. Samson started out making the Sieve Grip, a huge and heavy three wheeler. Around the same time they started making the Model M, they also came out with the Model D "Iron Horse". The Iron Horse ran out front of the driver and was steered with reins. It was a great idea but came a little too late and the unit had severe mechanical issues.

I have attached a stock photo until I can get mine uploaded.

Here's some info from ANTIQUE TRACTOR GUIDE Vol VIII. Looks like it was General Motors attempt to get into the tractor market. There was one on RFD TV reciently, you might find some information from the people who air the antique tractor fever program. Click on the picture to enlarge it. Stan

Here are some photos. Once has solid rims with rubber bolted to them and the other has the open angle-iron cleats. Both have flyball governors run off from a flat belt.

My father-in-law bought them and I'm sure he will take them to shows. Gotta get them running first! We didn't even try the day we brought them home. We just made sure the engines were free and shoved them on a trailer with a skid steer loader.
