it sounds like as the oil thins as it gets hot, there is somewhere that is not as good as it should be to hold it in, worn bearings, crank, big end, worn oil pump gears??????
Hope you find the answer without blowing it up!

Phil, I think you are looking at worn bearings rather than a ring issue. If it was rings you would be consuming oil and blowing smoke and seeing blow-by. Oil pressure is more related to bearing clearances and it appears that once your oil heats up and thins, the clearances are too great to maintain good oil pressure. Of course, while you're replacing bearings you might as well get the cylinders in good shape and replace the rings anyway.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Are you talking rod end bearings?

The only way to know for sure is to plasti-gage them. But I suspect both rod and main bearings are significantly worn. More mains than rod bearings.

Oil pressure is like water pressure. If you put 10 gallons per minute through a 2" pipe you will have a certain pressure. Now with the same flow reduce the size of the pipe and the pressure increases.
With worn bearings it's working opposite. As the bearings wear the clearances increase allowing for reduced pressure.
Hope this helps.

I think I get it . without the proper clearances, oil does not enough back pressure through the ports. Right?

Just like putting your thumb over the end of a water hose.

Thanks for the input Donny! I was trying to find the words and you already had it taken care of.

My cub has high pressure ,then comes down after warming up.
opposite problem or is this a problem. I had the engine done out. If so,what is the proper clearance for the cub. And how do you fix it.

Phil, that is pretty much normal and I wouldn't worry about it.

PWL,

Two things are happening as the engine warms up. 1st, the oil gets thinner and second, the bearing clearance gets larger. How far does the oil pressure drop :?: That will determine whether you have a problem or not.

Doesn't sound to me that you have a problem.
