New Holland 451 hydraulic lift conversion?

Postby dmacarthur » Fri Jul 10, 2015 6:31 pm

Anyone had any experience adding a hydraulic cylinder to a 451 sicklebar mower to raise and lowe the cutter bar independent of the 3PH? I am willing to pliw ahead but any advice will be much appreciated. NOT for the Cub, by the way!

Sounds like you need a 456 New Holland trailer type instead of the 451. It works from a remote hyd cyl. Guys around here who have one prefer it to a mounted type. I have a 451 that I use on a Ford 3000 and love it. As a matter of fact, I mowed my hay fields today.

I am curious as to why not use a 3 ph if you have one. Mine worked perfect on my Ford.

Thanks Big Hoss, the reason I would like the hydraulic lift is that it would be handy to keep the 3PH at the same height and be able to raise and lower the cutter bar- I use the mower for fields and edges most of which are rocky, rock piles, ditches, puddles etc. I have been using sickle bar mowers of one type or another for 40 years and have always had a hankering for a way to raise the bar while keeping the 3PH level.... plus, it would mean another project! But your point is excellent- if I can find a 456 the geometry should be the same.

Not a 451, but Dad and I did one on a JD mower that we had mounted on a Ford 801. It worked pretty good as I remember. We used it until Dad sold the 801. Actually what we used was an old truck power steering cylinder. I'm not familiar with the 451, but if it has a pit-man, remember you can't raise the bar very much while running or you will break it.
