John Deere L.A.

Is anybody on board familiar with a John Deere L.A. model?. My son brought me one last week and it has no exhaust stack or muffler on it. I am trying to figure out how the muffler or a straight pipe attaches to the manifold. It dont have threads like the Cubs. It is just a smooth I.D. in the 90° elbow that it would fit in/attach to. I just chipped out (cleaned) the I.D. of the elbow of what was a layer of carbon or possibly an epoxy that held a pipe or muffler. I imagine I should really be asking this question on a J.D. board but thought I would try here first.

I asked your question of one of the fellow directors at our tractor club director's meeting last night. He works as a mechanic at a J.D. dealership and restored a beautiful LA last year, and here's what he said: The muffler can go on the OUTSIDE of the elbow and is attached by a clamp. He also said the muffler is available with the elbow attached and then can simply be bolted on.

Thanks for the reply George. I found out that the original LA muffler did fit inside the elbow and was brazed at the elbow/muffler joint. I also tried a new Cub muffler on the elbow and it will work perfect after cutting a little length off of the inlet to make it the same as the original JD muffler.

I forgot about posting this. I guess My 2-month memory test is a failure. . Anyhoo since I posted this I have gotten the Little LA running good and tried it out a couple days ago. I used the cultivators to rip up about 1-acre of My yard and re-leveled it for future smoother mowing. That little 2-cylinder chuggernaut is quite a work pony but sure seems cumbersome compared to the Cubs.
