Onan Generator Help

Postby tmays » Sun Dec 13, 2015 1:50 pm

Got this generator off a RV. Put a temp gas tank on and fired it up. Will only run for a few seconds then shuts down

Before I go chasing phantoms with the engine, was curious to know if it's designed to shut down under certain conditions, such as the four wire strand that's been cut from breaker box(?) maybe? I am no electrician.

Wiring diagrams are on the internet.

I would start looking for the problem at the solenoid for the ignition/fuel.

Since the engine runs for a few seconds, thinking ignition related problem. Normally if it were a fuel flow problem the engine would take longer than a few seconds to die.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Do not overlook a malfunctioning low oil shut down.

John I think you nailed it. If it runs real good for about 5 to 10 seconds then shuts down it probably needs a new low oil shut down sensor, if it has plenty of oil in it. Or if one of the wires cut controls the sensor.

Sometimes you can tip the generator toward the oil level sensor (get the sensor's feet wet) and then tip it back to level ground and have it start. Those oil sensors are picky. Also, you might want to look at the air cleaner / filter assembly. Make sure that it isn't clogged up and that the choke is opening. These usually have an automatic choke that opens (maybe too soon).

If it has a lw oil sensor and you can locate it you can normally disconnect the wire to see if that is the fault. That works if the sensor is a level sensor in the sump, but if it is a pressure sensor, then shorting it will normally bypass it. Do not be surprised if there are no parts available, Onan is getting pretty bad about not supporting their older stuff.

RV Generators were set up to use the Generator section to turn over the engine to start.

Thanks for the help, fellers. I haven't had a chance to dig further, yet.
What little research I've done so far says that it won't run if the generator is not producing electricity? Possibly the slip ring may need cleaned? I have no idea what that is. Haha At any rate, that won't be the first thing I check. I'll check the low oil switch first and go from there.
Again, thanks, and any other ideas are appreciated

The "slip ring" is the end of the armature that the brushes ride on and need to be real clean!---my welder had to be cleaned before it would make arc!---My welder is basic overgrown ac alternator like your car/truck/tractor has on them! thanks; sonny

I'll tack this question on here - not to hijack the subject, but same realm,
I have a little Rounder L600 skid loader with an Onan BF engine - runs fine for a while, then gets real bad - cough misfire, no power, arcing at points, etc.
Install new condenser [ now 'capacitor'] and runs like a champ.

Why do I keep killing condensers?
One of the few advantages of growing older is that I finally realized that I haven't made ALL the stupid mistakes! Yet!

I still run the same condenser in the ONAN 2500 generator that came with it in 1973
