Howdy,
I have a sickle sharpener that I can not match to images in a Google search. I got it yesterday when I bought a Gravely with a sickle mower. I haven't found a Gravely forum like this Cub forum yet, but I hope there is one...
The only ID on the gear cover is S42 or maybe 842.
Can anyone ID this sharpener?
It spins easily and the clamps work. It looks "original", even has square nuts on the bolts.
I went looking in the PDF manual section for instructions on using the Farmall sharpener, but I did not find one. Is it so obvious that a manual isn't necessary?

Paul, if you are on Facebook, Gravely Tractor Collectors is a very knowledgeable group.

Your sharpener appears to be close in manufacture to this: http://www.stevenchalmers.com/Gravely/PVD1956/15_SickleGrinder.shtml

Yup Stanton, That does look like mine, except I have an enclosed gear. The rails and bar clamp look the same.
This does make sense because the sharpener did come with a Gravely tractor. I will have to dig a set of CUB sickle knives out of the shed and see if this works.

Re: Sickle Sharpener ID ?
I would like to give a report on how well it works, but you should know that I have nothing to compare it to. I've never used a Sickle Sharpener before, just my 4 1/2 inch angle grinder. I read the manual on Rudi's server but that didn't say very much.
I clamped the sharpener to a heavy piece of I beam, and clamped a set of knives. Cranking the handle and holding the knives to the stone AND getting the knives aligned to sharpen 2 edges at a time was harder than I expected. If I only worked on one edge it went smoothly.
You can see that I moved the knives so that the bottom of the V was not at the center of the clamp. I was grinding the clamp as I got closer to the bottom.

Re: Sickle Sharpener ID ?
Paul, I think the stone should come to a point/corner in the middle. That would allow the stone to sharpen all the way along the cutting edge. Your's is pretty close to being worn out.
Bob
Edit: See how the stone is shaped in Stanton's post, or the IH manual.

Re: Sickle Sharpener ID ?
Looks like it's trying to sharpen them... I know the stone on the McCormick model has a 1/4" +/- lateral slop; so it can move sideways to center itself on the clamped knife section.
Not sure if your stone is interchangeable with the McCormick version or not. You might keep an eye out for other Gravely stones (if they are no longer available). Otherwise, if you're like me, you'll just put this up on a shelf for display and use a 4-1/2" angle grinder. Seems to be quicker and more efficient.

That was my plan.
I'll look at stones at tractor meets and auctions, but I won't be in a hurry to get one.
