Leveling Cultivator Issues on CIH 265

Postby Cotton265 » Sun Mar 05, 2017 6:05 pm

I just bought a 1990 Case IH 265. This has always been my "dream tractor" to own, and I finally got one. In college I used one at an ag research station to spray small plots, and I fell in love with the 265. I now have a garden big enough to warrant a tractor, even though it is slight overkill (2800 sq/ft in size).

The 265 I bought has the 416 version of the 265 front cultivators, which is the "four sweep front section." This seems very similar to the old 144 cultivators. I have never used a tractor with front/belly mount cultivators, so I am learning as I go.

I am having issues getting both sides the same height- the left side is higher, and I can't figure out what the deal is. On the square shank mount on the LH side is around 2" higher. I want to get both sides the same height. Here is my info:
1. Per the owners manual, I have both lift rods at exactly the same length- 25" (which is max) at a lifted position.
2. I have adjusted the lift arm clevis on the LH side making it both shorter and longer, and I couldn't tell much of a difference if any. What exactly is the adjustable clevis used for?
3. At the front of the tractor at the gang beam bearing, the main beams are both the same- 22 1/4" from center of gang to level concrete floor.
4. When I measure the main beam at the toolbar bracket, the LH side is 21 1/4 and the RH side is 22 1/4" from cent to floor.

I have read both 265 and 144 cultivator owners manuals, but it doesn't tell you much about adjustments. Is something out of adjustment or is something warped? I don't want to start dismantling and ordering parts if something is just out of adjustment.

I bedded up my garden with some disk hiller mounted on the square shank mount, and you can tell a difference in the beds, but that isn't a huge concern of mine. My biggest concern is when I start using the front cultivators to cultivate with when my plants are small. My beds are 42" and I only plan on using cultivator sweeps on the front diamond tool bar. I don't plan on doing away with the hoe entirely, but I will be happy with the rear cultivator cleaning out the middles between the beds and the front cultivators cleaning off some of my bed.

Also, the owners manuals say to lubricate the cultivator pivot points with SAE 30W oil. Is this the best to use, or is there something better now?

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I doubt that anyone on this web site has much experience with the 265 and cultivator. I'll take a stab at it. It isn't clear to me where the adjustable lift arm clevis is, so no comment.

The right lift arm on the tractor is splined to the rockshaft. Is it in the right position? Looks like both lift arms should be at the same angle. Given that is OK and everything is as you checked, it isn't clear why both sides wouldn't be at the same height, may be an adjustment or a bent part.

I suggest that you adjust the lift rods to whatever length evens up the working tools on each side. The rods will end up with different lengths but it shouldn't cause a problem. It is easiest to adjust them with the ground tools lowered onto a smooth hard surface.

SAE 30 will work fine (30W doesn't exist).

Thanks, Jim.

After several messing with it for over an hour I finally got the middle gangs level by adjusting the lift rod lengths. I didn't realize that they didn't have to be at the same length.

The good thing about the 265 front cultivator is that it is identical to a 144, and luckily there is a reasonable amount of info on that model.

Now I just need to figure out the optimal cultivator setup for cultivating after planting. Luckily I have a small, four row "practice field" to play in.

You will learn as you go. Lots of factors can affect a little adjustment here, a little adjustment there. I used to hate the first day of cultivating, took my dad and grandaddy FOREVER to get the 4 row rolling cultivator set just right......the first pass was go 10 feet, stop and adjust this, go 10 feet, adjust that, go 50 feet, adjust that a little more, etc.
