My neighbor has a Wisconsin VE4 engine on a homemade tractor, took mag off and had it rebuilt. I am trying to time it , we have a book on it but it is vague about timing. We set it to TDC , the mark on the fin and lined up with shroud line on the mag gear timimg mark to center of timing window . It will start but will not develop power , I believe it is too far avanced when I dro back a tooth on mag it seems to be too far retarded . The main problem is there is no adjustment on the mag, therefore it has to be perfectly timed to run properly I wonder if any of you have had experience with these engines. It was running good before the mag rebuild but he was having trouble starting it, therefore I assume it was in time when mag was removed. I have been very patiently working with it , but am holding Naval vocabulary in reserve and am about to break that out if I can' t figure it out .

Re: How to time Wisconsin VE 4 ?
Steve, thanks for the info. THE REST OF THE STORY ,
I suspected last week that the fly wheel had been changed and timimg mark was duifferent. Today we pulled the head where no 1 is located and sure enough that was the problem , timed to just slightly before TDC and that cured the problem. This is an old engine, just goes to prove never assume some po hasn't jerry rigged it.

Remember the Wisconsin engine of a baler the neighbor had gave us fits until we found out it fired at both the top and bottom of the piston travel!?!?!?!? Crazy but that was how it worked!
