Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
Does anyone on here have an old Gibson Tractor or know anything about them? I recently picked one up locally that looks to be mostly original from what I can tell. It has a Wisconsin Engine and a Borg-Warner Jeep Transmission. Has the original Turning plow and front scrape blade Mounted. Tractor was sitting in a barn for approx. 18-20 years along with the Cub we recently bought and I posted about. The engine is free and I am wanting to start it up and test it out, so I will know what to expect when I start the restoration.
So far, it Looks like the magneto will have to come off for cleaning and tuneup. I also know I will need another front start pulley.

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
The Gibsons were made in my home town, Longmont, CO. Most of the records were burned in the parking lot when the plant closed, so there are no lists that correlate SN with year of manufacture. The original engine was a Wisconsin AEH which your's has. Your's is a model D. The first version was an A which had a round end gas tank instead of the oval end. There is a Club and you can get reprints for the engine and tractor on eBay.

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
A word of warning, if it isn't timed right it can produce a serious kick back when trying to start it. I was trying to start my Grandpa's Gibson one day at about the age of 12 or 13, and wound the rope, gave it a pull, and ended up standing on the other side of the tractor before I could let go of the rope.

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
Is there a way at all to date the tractor using the serial number? Surely someone has researched it.

I hear ya John. Yeah my grandfather has an older 2 cyl Wisconsin engine that has a starter and he wants to put that on it. I'm gonna try and get it running to change his mind because I want to keep it original. I know it's not fun starting it with a rope but I don't want to change it up since it's stayed original all these years

None that I've ever seen. It's been said that Wilbur Gibson would skip blocks of serial numbers so it would look like production was higher when he went for bank loans.

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
Do you think it would be safe to date it with the engine numbers?? Even if that is available too

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
There is a Wisconsin site that lists that info. It would probably get you within a year or two on the tractor.

Chase, according to the Wisconsin site, your engine was made in Jan, 1948.

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
I would be confident to say that mine is a 1948 model tractor then. I wouldn't think that engine would sit around until 1949. I appreciate that help Bob. If you don't mind saying, where did you find that info?

According to the Hot Line Guide, the model D was only made '50-'53. Accurate?

Re: Gibson Tractors - Anyone Know Anything About Them
I'm thinking that isn't accurate Jim. Here is a good write up I just found over on YT.
