Towing vehicle info - Ford Expedition?

Postby Dale Finch » Tue Aug 01, 2017 12:24 pm

I'm sitting in a 2014 Ford Epedition EL limited with only 6000 mi. I need a vehicle that can tow my 18' trailer (2000#) with a Cub and Super A. Anyone have experience or knowledge of pros and cons of this vehicle? I am really tempted to buy it, but wanted some input. Need info ASAP as the dealer wants his car back!

Dale,

A bit of research and I found that towing capacity is from 6000 to 9200 lbs, depending on how it is equipped. No experience with an Expedition but my '11 F-150 tows just fine.

My own experience is with only one. The cops have one where I work, so I have to road test it every so often when I work on it. Personally, I don't like the way it handles. It just seems like it's all over the road. I've been through the front end and not found anything out of the ordinary. My own opinion, with the one car. Long story short, if you like how it goes, get it. The only big thing we've had with it is a new intake manifold. All the Crown Vic's have been through a manifold also. The disclaimer is that they're all cop cars, they haven't had a soft life. I might be forgetting something, so if you come up with a specific question, go ahead and, you might just jog my memory enough

I have a 2007 Expedition that is issued to my by the Fire Department I tow our Kubota UTV on our 20' utility trailer on deployments and it does fine.. The Kubota is the 4 seat version 1140 UTV it weighs about 1000LB with the fire equipment loaded on.

The EL version may do better than my standard since it has a longer wheelbase. be sure to get a trailer brake installed and you should be fine

FYI mine gets 13MPG average

Short answer, check your owners manual and the information posted on the drivers side door post.

To many variables to provide an answer. Depends on how your vehicle is equipped, engine. transmission, transmission/wheel drive, towing packages, other options.

And I own a 03 Expedition that was a police package. Has the big engine, 4 wheel/automatic all wheel/2 wheel drive, front and rear towing package, and bunch of other options.

The 03 Expedition weighs in a 2 1/4 ton. The vehicle's weight is fine for most trailer work. The big but is how the vehicle is equipped.

Edit. My 03 Expedition rides and drives as good or better than the Cadillacs I use to own. I'm a fan of big old boats. My 03 Expedition gets right at 18 mpg on the highway.
I have an excuse. CRS.

Your trailer and 2 tractors cross over the 6,000 pound line. It is going to depend on how the Expedition is equipped. You are up in the range where an equalizing hitch would help. Read this:

I worked for 25 years for Ford as a truck tech, they are a nice ride, would recommend rent one for a couple days to see if you like it, that way you do not spend a lot of $$$ then find out you hate it

The Expedition is basically a Suburban like F-150, while the Excursion is the F-250 variant. It should do fine for most towing, as long as it's set up probably. If it has the towing package, then there will be some information on it's towing capacity.

I would do a bit more research, 6K miles is very low for a 3 year old vehicle. Check the drivers side door post for a sticker stating that the Odometer has been changed. Also ask for service records.

I told my wife I was thinking about selling the GMC and buying a Ford, she told me she thinks it's time we both start seeing other men.

Do not over look trailer brakes and a good controller.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I agree the low mileage, although really great, is a tad supicious! The car has been "Ford Certified", but not sure how seriously to take that.

I will defitely head over today and check out the door for more info. Also, need more info for deciding what equipment it has for the 8900# rating. Of course the sales prople swear it has "everything"...yeah, right!!

It does have the brake controller (which I haven't read about), but a big concern on the chart for towing that Jim included is on the TRAILER TOWING PACKAGE chart:
1 which rear axle ratio it has (on door pillar)
2 whether this Expedition is the "Standard" or 536?
3 on re-reading the info, it states I MUST have a weight-distributing hitch for the max capacity...another $200-500 plus finding one and having it installed.

Think I will head over to the dealer to get some answers, borrow the manual and read it over lunch!! Thanks so far for the input. :? :coffee: ......or

A Carfax check will let you know if there have been any insurance claims against it. If it has been sold previously it will also give you the milage at the time of each sale.
