Postby countershaft » Tue Aug 15, 2006 7:46 pm

According to my McAfee site adviser, when we signed up here, ( FarmallCub.com) this site posted our e-mail address on the web, making it available to spammers. We get 16 (on average) spammy e-mails a week. Most of site's links are to sites which are safe however there is the possibility of hackers also getting into this site . Anyone want to coment ? bryson

Last week we had a new member here called slonopat, I checked his profile and it was porn with a web site link, so yes I believe there are outsiders trying to spam us.

You should be aware that the site moderators check out the profile of new members and when we find one of those spammers they are deleted as soon as Dennis can do it. As far as the spam e-mails go, your anti-virus and your internet service provider should be filtering them out. Some of them do occasionally still get thru though.

Bryson..

According to my McAfee site adviser, when we signed up here, ( FarmallCub.com) this site posted our e-mail address on the web, making it available to spammers

Please excuse the length....   :!:

Well, yup, that would be McAfee.. and every other piece of software.. it is called using a hook. How many times have you seen ads or whatever for a free virus scan.. you can betcha bottom dollah, that that software will find viruses on your computer, and guess what, it will remove some but not all, unless of course you done go an buy that there software... Geesh.. I will really be surprised when one of these companies actually comes up with something original....

First and foremost.. doesn't matter what YOU do on the web.. unless YOU are surfing into porn sites and stuff.. YOU personally will not be targeted.. Oh, and as for your email addy being available here or on any BBS, that in and of itself does not represent a danger.. your address is actually quite available to anybody who wants it, simply by typing in your name and street address.. it is in an on-line database somewhere.. at least at your ISP.. worry about them.. cause their on-line filters and stuff are usually useless.. cause guess what.. for you to get spam, it has to get by your ISP first.. they are primary, and they are NOT doing their job..

What actually occurs is that bots get into a pop server and then raid all the emails.. or you get a Trojan that raids your email addy list, and then the spamming starts. What it is, is basically a two fold operation.

1. The primary goal is to get people to visit their sites.. as the spammers basically get paid by the return hits on top of how many email addy's they can grab.

2. The secondary goal, is if they cannot get additional hits,,, then denial of service or DoS is the goal.

My email address has been widely available for almost 10 years now, and I can pretty much guarantee you that 99.99999% of the spam that I get has not been generated by any activity of mine on the net, or by having my email address readily available.

A couple of things you can do, and you won't even see the stuff.. but you got to be willing to do the work..

1. Get a decent Anti-Virus, Firewall, System Maintenance Suite etc.,. and unfortunately McAfee and Norton are not it. I am not an IT professional, I am not an employee of any software producer.. I am just a guy who has lots of puters, and has been building, repairing and cleaning them both physically and the software for almost 15 years now... for a lot of people, and I have learned the hard way.

I used to use Norton exclusively until it became no longer tenable. They have gone from being cutting edge, clean code software to the Visual Basic GUI interface layers of junk that do nothing but add Gigabytes of useless garbage to a program. It is entirely a function of the school of thought that promotes.. greatest amount of monetary gain from least amount of effort......  :?

Also, Norton has become a resource hog. One now needs 1 gig of ram to efficiently run Windows XP, Norton and Office 2003 all at the same time...... :!: A resource hog is a program that has far too many layers and has lazy code writers.. hence more lines of code to process, which requires more resources to do basic tasks..

McAfee has always relied on heavy corporate support to keep it alive, it has never been a real home user friendly program.. and I find it does not get anywhere near the amount of viral stuff that Norton does/did, and not even in the same league as IOLO.

However, software is a personal preference issue, and I would never be so bold as to tell anyone what to use.. suggest yes, but that is it...

2. You also, need to get a Spam filter. There are many of em.. at the moment, I am still playing with Spam Fighter.. it seems to be okay.. it is a semi intelligent database -- by that I mean.. there are constant updates, it talks to it's servers worldwide and they catch about 95% of all Spam that I get. I do have to manually block new spammers, but then those go into the worldwide database, and everybody benefits. How good it is, is still up in the air.. but until I discover something better, it will stay.

3. You also must be willing to do the work.

A. A minimum of once per week you must perform a system wide check. I leave my computer running 24/7.. easier on the equipment, easier on the power bill.. A system wide check should include a number of items in your arsenal.. and that is aside from your primary security programs. Oh and Windows Firewall is a basic firewall and should not be relied upon by itself.. it is like Swiss cheese..

i.) Windows Defender -- is kinda good for ad-ware and other malware which includes bots.. these also are good vehicles to provide your addy to spammers.. and spammers do use bots heavily.
ii.) Ad-Aware SE - similar to Defender, but will find stuff WD doesn't etc.
iii.) Spy-bot Search & Destroy.. again, similar to the above 2.

While each of the above will not get all individually, by running in concert with each other, it is surprising how much malware is removed weekly. This also will aid in improving you system response..

B. Be aware... and be pro-active. Do not be afraid to have your email on the net.. that isn't the problem. The major problem is low-lifes who have nothing better to do than to dream up this stuff to make every-body's life miserable, to deny service for a giggle or for profit, to create a reason for additional software purveyors to exist. This can be good or bad depending on your viewpoint and the size of your wallet. However, there are many good Shareware programs out there that will do the job quite satisfactorily..

As Big Dog stated... the mods and Dennis do pay close attention to who registers.. but those who register as a new member are they are actually say a porn site.. well they cannot spam you from here.. all they can do is hope you will click on their link.. then YOU and your addy will be in there database. Basically these fake members are a PITA and an irritant. They also try to by-pass the fake URL laws, by becoming members of forums so that they can be in compliance with continually evolving legislation in MANY jurisdictions that are pro-active in Internet service.

Don't worry about the security of your email address here. If it was to be compromised at all, it will be compromised at the source -- your ISP.. as it is freely available (check your EULA)...

Hi Bryson,
Right click this page and in the menu click "View Source" and you will see the email addresses of any of us who have chose to add our email addy to our profiles (that is what site advisor is reporting).

If you spend a little time you can also find all of our email addresses all over the search engines as well.

I think the only way to really get away from spam is to use a program as
cubguy47 mentions above, of coarse then you will have to check your junk bin occasionally to be sure you aren't blocking some good contacts.

I have just learned to deal with it.
when I get home, I devote about 30 minutes to removing malware, and cleaning up the email box
Best to ya...John

Your email address becomes public knowledge about as soon as you sign up for it, just like your home address gets junk mail. Rudi has some good advice on keeping your mailbox free of clutter and your OS free of bugs. Only 16 spams per week? I get about 600 spams each week, most are filtered out via my email provider. The few that get thru the spam filter, I delete post haste.

My spam catcher catches well over 100 spams a day and approxamately 2 dozen get through to my e-mail. Outlook Express has one too and I have 762 words in it that is not supposed to get through if the from line contains them, but that doesen't work, they get through anyway. The only virus protection that I've had for years is AVG and it works for me. But I tune my computer almost daily. This computer is 4 1/2 years old and I am very satisfied with it's performance. (knock on wood)

I am basicly computer stupid with my set up I use Norton anti virus with a manual fire wall that gets put on every time the puter goes on ,also I have pop up blocker that is always on, my e-mail almost never gets used by a spamer maybe 3 a month that go to junk mail then I just delete them with out opening.

As for that fake new member that I found last week, I have to say the mods here are quick and right on top of it because I clicked that profife when his name showed on the opening page as the newest member as soon as I relized what it was I went back to the opening page but he was no longer listed as the newest member and he was also not in the members list either, so I assumed that the mods squashed him right from the start, if I had found him in the members list I would have sent heads up on his profile to Dennis.

I would be tickled to death it get a dozen spam emails a week. Centurytel, my ISP runs a spanm blocker on their server that I can go back and check whenever I want, and it traps 30 to 50 per day. there are still some that get through, but the spam blocker on Firefox catches most of them, plus it is adaptive. normally after you tell it an email is spam, it sends anyfurther emails form that same person to a junk file.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

I'm not puter savy at all but I get 0 yes 0 spam thru to my email. I'm even so bold as to use my XP outlook express. I have earthlink as my ISP and it catches everything and when someone wants to contact me they submit a request to be added. I use Protector Plus anti virus and it has kept me up to date almost everyday. Earthlink has a bunch of blocker tools I only need a few but I really have not ever had anyproblem with spammers. I buy a lot off of the net and go to numerous sites just surfing and I sign up for stuff using my email address. But when the site responds I get a page on which addresses that I can choose will be added to come thru. I hope it don't sound like a commercial for Earthlink. I just don't know anybetter than to use the spam blocker at full power and I maybe doing something wrong but it seems to be working if I am.

This is just my 2 cents.
Since Dennis put the adds from Goggle on this site my spam has
trippled.
It also seems that the bogus nasty posters have doubled.
I know the mods do there best to get rid of them as soon as they are seen.
PS: I have a program that will give me you IP address & email with just a click & it was sold by microsoft to anybody.
You can remove your email & I can still get it from a post you made months ago.
If it's been broken I did it.
If its not broken wait till I touch it.
