Greetings to all,
My Name is Charles and as my screen name hints, I was born and raised in the city. (Miami, FL) At least until I was 18 and Uncle Sam said he wanted me. So 22 years later after being bounced all over the world including 4 years at Ft. Wainwright (Fairbanks, AK ) someone idea of a sick joke. But once I got use to it (the cold) it was nice. Best hunting and fishing I've ever seen. I got out in Washington DC and didn't want to stay there so I moved to North Carolina and married my childhood sweetheart. Seems odd, my dad was born and raised in NC and moved to Miami after WWII and I moved back to NC.
Anyway after living in Charlotte for a number of years we found a place away from the city and we are loving it. My wife was raised on a farm so we strated doing the farmer thing. As I tell people, before we moved here the only chicken I delt with came in plastic. Now this place is like a zoo. Horses, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, ect.
The one biggest reason I'm here is for the knowledge. The mechanical end of the Cub I can handle. Most of the time I spent in the Army I had a wrench in my hand. But knowing I'm not going to find parts and advice for a tractor thats older than me at the local NAPA. And from what I've read from some of the postings these guy's know what they are talking about. They talk like they have been around this type of equipment most of their lives and I could trust what they say. I look foward to being part of the Cub clan and hope one day I can attend one of the Cubfests (if I can get caught up with my farmer thing work)
Best to all,
Charles Beck

Can see why you wanted out of Charlott. My daughter and her husband lived near by in Waxhaw for a while.

I think I already posted the Welcome Wagon, but I will post it again for you here, that way you will have a QUICK way to find it.. and you probably will want to... no - you can't ask why
Ahhhh another denizen of the Arctic Wastelands..
Back in 1977 to 1979 I got lucky and the Canadian Forces sent me to CFS Inuvik. Up on the McKenzie Delta. I guess about 300 miles or so north of Fairbanks. In 79 I got to get a Beach Pass just before Christmas, we were able to go to Fairbanks for a little R&R in the Sunny South and do a little shopping for presents.
In 77, I got to do my first sting as a member of the Chosen Frozen at CFS Alert -- Look wayyyyyy up to Ellesmere Island, then look waaaayyyy up the island to the very tip --- THAT is Alert.
But welcome, and I can tell you gladly it is nice to have another member of the Northern Penquin Clan aboard..
Cheers, and Bravo Zulu for your 22 years as a servant of the US citizenry Well done, and feels good don't it
Also, just so you know, another mechanical wizard is always welcome, and you will probably have much to contribute with your years of experience as a wrench wrangler...I look forward to reading your input. I may have been a darn good communicator in the service and a pretty good cabinetmaker in my real life, but I am not such a good mechanic.. actually mechanically challenged would be the descriptive terminology...
And as for the apprentice farmer thingy.. until I lost a lot of my health, out house sounds like your house.. and boy do I miss the critters.. You have a good thing going, and I am glad you like it. Glad that you also have a better half that loves is as well
Welcome to the Family
First, to the greatest forum on the internet, and to the Cub Family. You will find that all the folks on this forum are kind, helpful and just full of Cub info and knowledge. They also happen to be the finest folks I have ever met
Ok, so here is the spiel :
I would suggest that you read this thread: New Members and Visitors, Please READ Prior to Posting. There are many great links to informative pages such as the ATIS FAQ's 1 and ATIS FAQ's 2, The Best of H.L. Chauvin who has written very interesting articles on troubleshooting common problems with your Cub.
Also, you might want to visit the Cub Manual Server as there is tons of info on servicing, maintaining and re-building your Cub. In addition to this basic information, there are also a number of other useful tools available on the server. There is the Specialty Services page which has contact info for neat stuff like getting your seats recovered, buying quality Decals, Serial Number tags and a host of other neat items. Also there are the Parts Pages - both Used Parts Suppliers and New Parts Suppliers pages with links to quality dealers. I am always looking for YOUR favourite dealers for New and Used Parts to include here. These are intended to complement the businesses who support the FarmallCub.com Website.
I would also recommend that you visit Binder Books and purchase the three most important manuals you can own for Maintenance, Repair and Rebuilding your Cub. These are the Owner's Manual, the GSS-1411 Service Manual and the TC-37F Parts Manual. Although they are available on the Cub Manual Server, it is better is you also have your own paper copy. Binder Books is the only Authorized IH Publication Reprint House and they have the best quality manuals available. Most other's are not of the same quality. Just a personal thought here, the I&T Shop Manuals, although helpful in some areas, really are not sufficient for the job. If you wish though, they are good additional reference works.
IF you really want to get the skinny on all things Cub, might I suggest you get a copy of Ken Updike's Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet's . While you are at it Original Farmall Cub and Cub Cadet is Ken's latest addition to the series. Along with Guy Fay's Letter Series Originality Guide, these are three must have's in anyone's collection.
In addition to the above information, don't forget to check out the various articles that are available to help with your Repair, Restore, Rebuild or just your Maintenance Projects. There are a number of sub pages such as Electrolysis or Rust Zapper's, Maintenance Tips, Jigs and Techniques, Implement and Part Sketches and of course the Paint, Decals & Other Finish Questions which has the Paint Chart and the Paint Committee Decisions links.
I truly hope that you enjoy your Cub and that you will be a frequent contributor to the forum. Again, to the Cub Family

I bought an old tractor all dusty and worn,
knew nothing about her just the year she was born
I washed her and greased her and painted her red
Now she lives happily right here in my shed.

Welcome Cityslicker! Please make yourself at home and join in whenever you can. One thing about your intro though, you'd be surprised at how many parts for your cub you can find at NAPA.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

welcome city!!!!
I'm a city slicker myself. Grew up in down town st. louis, MO up until i was 6. Then i didn't think there was such thing as a tractor or a real chicken. lol but you come to love the country a bit.
To me i still live in the city, i live in a small old subdivision in the country but the houses are fairly close together. We're looking to buy property farther out.
Anyway, good luck with the farmin' thing!!
