Pic question

I know this topic has been covered a million times, so sorry for the repeat. I was just wondering if there was an easy way to keep the clarity of my photos when I resize them for posting. I think my camera is a 6mp? When I shrink them down, they seem to lose their sharpness.

The program is PhotoImpact. I think the resolution is 96 pixels/inch? And I just resize till it says it's under the 512kb? You can check out the holiday pics in the album, or I just added one to my album on the photo host. I'm fairly illiterate when it comes to this stuff, but the pictures look real sharp when I take them. Sorry

I usually re-size them to 640 x 480 that seems to be a good size. I also edited your "Christmas Picture" post to make the picture a little larger.
All I needed to do was to take out the "normal_" portion of the picture URL.

If I save it at that size, it ends up being 900kb. Too large to upload. What am I doing wrong? Do you save it as a jpeg?

IrFanView which I like, is like other photo-editing software.. and it does change quality unfortuantely. Surprisingly, WinXP's Image Resizer which is part of the XP PowerToys package.. does this surprisingly well...

After you install it, right click on the photo in Windows Explorer.. click resize.. then choose small 640x480 and you should be down to 35 or 40 kbs in size.. at least that is what I get when I do it.. works for me.. plus, you can actually scroll/magnify it when you save it to your puter from the forum.... which is useful as it doesn't distort..

The same picture at 640 x 480 will take much less bandwith as a .jpg than other format such as .bmp.

The short answer to your question above is yes, save it as a jpeg. Bitmaps are notorious bandwidth hogs. 640 X 480 jpg's are the best solution to your problem.

saving as a jpg you should have the ability to reduce quality a little to reduce file size. For pictures posted on the net it doesn't affect the viewing quality all that much.

Bob, you don't need to take pix at 6mb unless you are into serious portraits and photo manipulation. Set your camera to 1mb or so for normal picture taking. I then use Irfanview (free at http://www.irfanview.com) to resize and save in a compressed jpg. I think the size you are starign with is one of your problmes.

If I am taking pictures strictly for posting on the net I set the camera for 640 X 480 resolution and I don't have to mess with reducing them. If I am taking shots for detail or something that I may want to print out I set the camera for higher resolution.
