anyone have any ideas on how to trap a gray fox :?: . live trap dosen't seem to catach ay thing but possoums

Have to see him frist. then have to have a gun when you do see him. then have to be able to hit  him when you do have a gun . in the mean time chichen count is getting lower and of course he dosn't take the old hens that don't lay much he gets the young en that are just starting to lay good

A fox will many times kill just for the sake of killing and not eat what it kills. I have shot many of them at night getting after my chickens. Sometimes there would be 15 chickens slaughtered and uneaten. I have also shot many Bobcats, Coyotes & other critters that wanted to get in the coop.

Dogman, find an experienced trapper in your area to snare him. An uncle of mine snares foxes, coyotes, etc. It's tricky business, you have to outfox the fox :!:

bury a windup alarmclock in a zip lock bag about 1/4" deep set a #1 steel trap on top of it and bait with a littlechicken tied to a stick about 18" above the trap he can't resist keep in mind putting boards around the trap so you won't catch the dog or the chickens

Will this rig set off the alarm when he grabs the chicken so you know he's there and can run out with the shotgun and let him have it :) :)

i think some one must have gotten him. haven't lost any more hens since he clean out all the new ones they run free and i don't see him very often but when i take a head count i can tell the fox or the owl have been eaten good. but thats part of living in the country, they have to eat too . boy i sure don't miss those Vermont winters live on Bomoseen the swamp end for 5 years then Rutland for about 22. been here for about 7 and love the sunshine
have a goodun keep your boots dry

I started out using battery powered infered alarms. All that did was wake me at all hours all night long and I would have to go out and do some shootin. I finally wired the coop with about 30,000v and haven't seen a varmint since. Works great :) Get more sleep too!!

I am sorry I did not read sooner. I have hunted and traped all sorts of animals up here in NY. Grey foxs will kill just for the kill and hide the carcases for later or for other animals to steel. Red foxs usally hunt to eat but they have been known to bury what they dont want till later. The best way for you to get that little guy is to get your self a tape recorder and grey fox pup distress tape. You can buy them online mine is denis kirk. you dont have to buy the exspencive player I made my own out of a old car cassett player and a motor cycle battery and a good size speaker. Dont be afraid of them alot of times when you play the tyape they will come running and run right in to you or your legs I have had to kick them before to get them at a distance to shoot. Do this at night with a spot light perferable with a red lens. And a shot gun. You start playing the tape they will come keep an eye out for them with the red lens light back and forth motion you will see there eyes when they come and when they get in to range give them heck. Just make sure its not a neighbors dog or cat checking out the noise of coarse.
