ramps

its getting close for the time for ramps to come up. Anyone in ohio have any luck growing them ? I planted a buch about 5 years ago that my brother in law broght from west virginia. they come up every year, but the dont spread. I dont pull any, but mabey i sould, would that help them spread ??

Just curious. What are ramps???

Well I was curious what they were too. Leeks huh!!, Gosh dernit, I was going to buy some seeds and plant them for future tractor ramps.

The taste (and smell) is a cross between strong onions and very strong garlic. You don't want to be going to the movies with your favorite date after a ramp dinner.

I thought it had to do with tractor ramps until I started reading the post. I guess they don't grow on the west side of the big river.

Me too. I was surprised the topic wasn't on the tractor board!
We have something my grandmother always called wild onion- roughly, you eat the top of the plant like green onion or chives. Also very strong, but tastes like garlic scapes (the garlic green sprout).
Spring eating here is cowslips (leafy green plant with yellow flowers that grows in wet areas) and fiddleheads (unfurled sprout of an oyester fern).

I dug a bunch of ramps yesterday. Ramps appear to propagate from the bulb. To my uneducated eye. It would appear that you need to divide the ramps (dig them up and replant the main bulb and the smaller bulbs that grow adjacent to the main bulb.)

We were over-ran by something that resembled that here, but I FINALLY got it gone with round-up and the roto-tiller!!!---still got some wild onions to get rid of, also winter onions are taking over! thanks; sonny
