weed spray

Postby technova » Sun May 06, 2007 1:29 pm

I am looking for some liquid spray to kill dandelions, thistles, and what looks to me to be wild rhubarb (don't know what it is called).
I have white pine, weeping willows, apple and cherry trees in the area.
What would work good without damaging the trees?
A friend said 2-4-D but my tree guy says he's seen trees killed by it.
I have about 3 acres to do and the best I ever get for calm weather is a slight breeze so I know it will be tough not to get some drift on the trees.

I bought a 15 gal. electric sprayer and mounted it on my 3 wheeler and I use 32 oz. of Kilz-All to the 15 gal. of water. So far it hasn't bothered my flowers. It takes about a week and a half but there is nothing left that it is sprayed on. I even spray about 2 feet out from my pond and it don't hurt the fish or ducks. A 32 oz bottle cost $13.50. I'm satisified with it and it don't take but a few minutes to spray about 1000 feet of weeds. It will probably take a second spraying before summer is over.

I've been using 24-D for years to treat my dandelions to something special. It only takes pennies worth to do the job on a couple acres where they can be a problem. I do try to avoid spraying on the leaves of any trees and keep my distance from the 'maters in the garden. It's a systemic killer and has to be absorbed through the leaves of the plant to kill it. It kills by promoting rapid growth that the offending plant can't keep up with.

I've used 2-4-D for a few years, but be very careful not to get too close to something you want to keep. I've just about killed my yucca plants by getting a little too close.

I use a product called TRIPLET. It contains 30% 2-4-d, 2.8% dicamba , 8.1% (+)-R-2(2menthl-4-Chlorphenoxy)propionic Acid**. I copied this off the label of the container. I always spray in late October, not much left in the garden. Works well for me. I see Farmers spraying similar products on bean stubble in December. I was spraying in the spring, then worried about drift. If fall application is good for farmers, I thought I would try it. With fall herbicide and fertilzer our lawn is better than it has ever been.

Technova,

Your profile says that you are in Strawbridge, Wisconsin. A Google search for Strawbridge, Wisconsin was next and POOF - Lafayette county, from there the rest is easy.

Someone in the Darlington office should have the answer to your question. Their recommendation(s) will be effective and legal (what is legal in one state may not be in another - thus I did not make any recommendation).

Good luck and yes we have a lotta weeds in Ohio AND a lotta fine cubbers!

It surprises me Strawbridge showed up on Google, it is an area not a town
mostly known by the old timers in the area. I guess Google knows all.

Is a yard or area sprayed with 2-4-D pet safe after it dries?

I have been spraying with a mix of ag rundup and 2-4-D. What the 2 4 D does not kill the roundup does. But the 2-4-D works faster. My neighbor suggested it for spraying my fence rows. He is a local farmer and knows his stuff. While 2-4-D will kill other stuff it is a bush and tree killer. For larger trees it is suggested that you drill a hole into the tree and pour some in to kill it. I have used it that way to kill mulbery trees and box elder. With them you cut the tree down and you get ten saplings coming up from the stump. A little 2-4-D and no problem.

Billy

PS always spray on days with no wind!! the wind will carry it a long ways and back on you. I alway wear latex gloves when spraying
Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. 1964 cub. Farmall 100 and 130.

If you are using a water mix for the spray, put a hefty dose of dish detergent in the mix, it will make it work much better. I use a mix of Roundup and 24LD with dish soap on multiflora roses and European thistles. Seems to work pretty good.
If you are not part of the solution,
you are part of the problem!!!

Burdock. If it's not burdock take a sample into your local extension office. They can identify it for you. Also, there are a number of gardening books available with common weed examples depicted.
