Cub gang reell mower

I was going through a cub book and noticed a gang reel setup for a cub? Is anyone familiar with this setup or has anyone seen one on a tractor? I would love to find one of these! I also am wondering if anyone has made their own gang reel setup? thanks

Only place I've seen 'em is in the books like you. Must be very rare. I used to have a 3 gang pull behind several years ago. Wish I still had it.

I've never seen one on a cub, except in a book either. Most common places to find them would have been a golfcourse, or on a fancy estate where people had more money than sense. In most places like that they would have been junked years ago. They'd be totaly useless in our Missouri fescue.

Are talking about the front mount and mid mount reel mower like in Ken Updjkes Farmall Cub book? If those are the ones I own both. I have had the mid mount since new. The front mount I got 2years ago. I am planing on restoring them this spring. If you go to Rudi's web site there is a sales sheet on there that I sent him on the mid mount mower.

I recall seeing them alot when I was young at the gulf coarses. They did a great job when kept sharp and in good condition. However the rottory did a better job if the grass was a little wet and replaced the reel movers as the first thing in the mornings was grass mowing on the gulf course. I had a 3gang pul type and it worked great. They are becomming rear.

in my grandfather's power equipment shop was a reel mower grinding machine. i remember helping him do dissassembly and sharpening on these mowers. a three gang National mower start to finish might take in the order of 2 hours per reel to complete. the reason being that the reel had to be removed from the machine in order put it on the sharpening machine. and, you had to sharpen and adjust the fixed shoe.
beautiful cutting job if the lawn was smooth, but expensive to sharpen.

Sadly, when the shop was closed up, the grinder went to scrap, along with several other machines i wish i could have recovered.

I have a gravely L1 walk behind with a reel mower attachment. To sharpen it, you just reverse the reel direction, apply some lapping compound on the blades and get your fingers (& whatever else could get sliced off) out of the way. Pretty nifty. It also made the blade & shearing surfaces match perfectly.....

I also have an L-1 Gravley but I have A rotary mower, plow &afew other things for it. It's a 1952 model that my dad gave me years ago. Iv'e seen the reel mowers for them & they're quite a machine. Much like the cubs. ( I have 2 49's and looking at another one)

Elmer. Your right about them being like cubs. You can get hooked on them the same way. They were my passion BC (before cubs). I also have quite a few attachments for the two I have. Rotary plow (2), roto tiller, brush hog (3), cultivator tool bar, snow blade (2), sulky. & whatever I forgot. I only occasionally use the rotary plow, roto tiller & brush hog. They can be rough on you the older ya get!

I had a '59 Model L Gravely with 30" rotary mower, blade, and dual wheels on each side. It was a strap start but always started on the 2nd pull. That thing could push snow about as well as my Cub! Due to a ruptured disc I decided to let it go. It was a great machine and I regret selling it. On Monday, I'll be looking at one which I understand hasn't run in 5 years. Does anyone know of a decent Gravely forum similar to this tremendous Cub forum? Thanks, Joe.

"Yahoo Groups" has a gravely board. Not as good as this one, though.

I have a pull strap start and an electric start. I use the pull start one more often. It starts right up from sitting one year to the next. Great magneto spark, I guess......
