Fan Assembly Question

Postby Donny M » Sat Apr 10, 2004 1:50 pm

Does the spindle in the fan assembly get an "O" ring or some other seal, or does the helix turned in the spindle and the 3 grooves keep oil from leaking :?:

Can't find a seal mentioned in the parts manual.

TIA,

Donny

Donny, there are no seals in the fan hub assembly.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, you've got an electrical problem.

Thanks Bigdog,

That's what I thought but wanted to be sure. Too much time in it to not ask the question. :D :D

Donny, if you've take the helix out be careful when reinstalling. One of the manuals (I don't remeber which one) shows it installed backward. If it is installed backward the hub doesn't get oiled.

John,

I was talking about the heilx cut in the spindle (part # 2). I think you're talking about the "Not Serviced Separately" part # 8 in the parts manual. I thought I remembered which way it attached to the spindle but now you have me worried. :? :?

You are correct. When reinstalling the spiral it needs to be turned so that it scoops the oil from the outer part of the fan hub and spirals it toward the center. The one in my parts manual is correct, but the service manual I have is reversed. My service manual is marked GSS-1411, Revision 1, February, 1976.

John,

Just looked at my service manual and it has it backwards from the parts manual. I would appear to me that the one pictured in the service manual is the correct orientation.

The one in this picture is backwards. When looking at the engine from the front the fan turns clockwise. Centrifical force pushes the oil out to the outer edge of the fan hub housing, and the spiral scopps it up and pulls it in towards the hub. The one in this picture will throw the oil away from the spindle.

John,
You are correct.

Now that I think about it the spindle is stationary. Soooo the Parts manual has it right. I think

I'm my prior post I was thinking that the spindle turned.

I think the person that made the drawing was thinking the same thing.
