HI, I have an old Gallion road grader and it has either an H or M motor. It has a rod knocking I need to fix it. I do not know the difference between the two, any one have pics of these motors ?

I'd bet money that the engine is an M. The H and the M engines are nearly identical in appearance, except the M is much larger. It might be easier if you could post a close-up pic of what you have? Or maybe take some measurements? I guess one quick way would be to measure the length of the manifold, from one end to to the other.

If you can get a casting number or part number from the block someone will know whether it is an H or M block. I agree with Rustyfarmall - I'd bet on an M.

Engine block part numbers may be different than on a tractor, makes them a little hard to look up. An easy visual clue is the small casting above the governor. On the H it is pretty short and a lot taller on an M. Look at the last picture on this page to see that the H part looks like.

Thanks for the pics, the manifold on the M looks like what I have, I will check the height of the gov. housing to be sure. Im sure that my Case dealer will be able to get me a set of rod bearings. One of my emplyees the last time he started it, had it at full throttle and it started to rap very loud. He immediatly shut it off, so if it did spin a bearing, i hope it didnt gauld the crank.

I wasn't able to find a 402,---but there is a model 104----early 50's date.--could that be it?--they show it as having a IH diesel motor in it, BUT, even so, that would make your gas motor an M, gasser!--if diesel then it could be a MD motor,--only the industrial version! ---just trying to help here!! thanks; sonny
