Extra oil line

This extra oil line is on my power unit. It runs from a bottle on top )with a shut off) to the vacume plug in the intake manifold. Why and what is it.

Reminds me of an alcohol evaporator on many of the diesel road tractors I've driven over the years. Something for combustion purpose goes there I would say. My vote.

Great contest. What is the prize?

My 1st guess. Something like an ether container to help start the unit in very cold weather.

2nd guess. Something to improve fuel mileage. My brother installed something like that on a car. It used a mix of water and menthol.

Can the container be unscrewed or opened up to put something inside?

Dual fuel. Start the engine and warm it up on gasoline then switch over to a cheaper fuel.

From your photo I can not tell if that is a duel fuel manifold on the power unit.

Insect fogger? It's impossible to know what the installer had in mind or if it was even a good idea. It's unlikely it was originally on the unit.

I wondered if it was something added to burn unleaded gas and add a top lubricant Just wondered if any one else had an idea.

Looks like a top cylinder oiler. They were usually added to engines that ran on natural gas. I don't know if they were available from the factory for U-1 engines or not.

I think Jim just won the "contest"? Sounds rational to me I always wondered about loss of lubricity (is a word right? ) with natural gas as opposed to gasoline.

That is interesting, a Top Oiler. The engine I was told is on the original mount from it's Harvester thresher bailer days. My friend, Al Cobb who bought it for me as a buzz saw in Penn Yan NY. Are there gas wells near the Finger lakes? Would a Top oiler be used with Propane?

I had a Jeep with a 327 Chevy engine in it years ago, and it had a water injector that looked very simular to that, Im not sure what a water injector did, but thats what the sticker on it said.

Ever hear of war emergency power on WW2 fighters? Spraying water into the cylinders cools the mixture allowing for more air and fuel to enter resulting in more power( improved volumetric effeciency). It wasn't good for the engine though. I've read that if it were used to escape the enemy the engine was used up once they got back.

The important part Bill is that they got back. A pilot returned was a precious item in WWII. To get the pilot back and a usable airframe at the same time priceless. In a way engines were expendable.

I would assume the the water turnign to steam as the cylinder fired also raised compression.
