Snow Thrower Lube

Postby jls8250 » Fri Jan 18, 2008 9:23 am

What does everyone use for changing the SAE 140 transmission fliud in the snow thrower gear box?

I've found 85W-140 gear oil, will this be OK?

I use Hy-tran in all my Cub Cadet gear boxes. The 85w might be heavy for winter use.
The Geezer from IHregistry.com which crashed and is now Cub Cadet Collectors.

If you mean a QA 42/36 thrower #2 chassis grease is recommended.

I was able to find a manual on the CW36 thrower and it states the fluid to use is "SAE 140 Transmission Fluid". When I read that I thought man that sure is thick oil for the cold winters.

That's why I thought the 85W-140 would be a better substitute......

Yes, but it's the CW36 (previous model). Is #2 grease a thick grease that you would use a grease gun with. The gear box has an allen screw I was able to remove tonight. Looks like there is no fluid at all in there......

This is a thrower I just picked up, so I don't know it's history.

Either will work. It's easy to pull the cover and inspect the gears and clean. I believe if it has the "hole" you can use the gear lube.
